His family alleges that the death was a result of side effects from the medication administered during the trial. The Jalahalli Police have initiated an investigation into the matter, registering a case of unnatural death.
Details of the Incident
According to Nagesh's brother, Revanasiddappa, Nagesh had no prior health issues before enrolling in the clinical trial. He registered for the trial through an app and underwent the procedure on December 2, 2024. On December 9, 2024 Nagesh visited Syngene for a check-up and returned home the same night. His second visit to Syngene was on December 12, 2024, and he stayed in the company's accommodation. Shortly after beginning the trial, Nagesh developed severe stomach pain and was admitted to the ICU of a private hospital on December 18, 2024. Revanasiddappa claims that Syngene contacted him, urging him to rush to the hospital at the time. Nagesh was discharged on December 26, 2024 and stayed in a PG accommodation where he underwent regular check-ups and returned to his brother’s residence, visiting the company twice a week for check-ups.
On the night before his death, Nagesh had dinner with his brother and went to bed as usual. However, the following morning, Revanasiddappa found Nagesh unresponsive. He contacted the doctor from Syngene, who instructed him to take Nagesh to the same hospital where he had been previously treated. Upon arrival, doctors declared Nagesh dead.
Allegations and Investigation
Revanasiddappa has filed a complaint alleging that the clinical trial caused his brother's death. He claims that Nagesh developed severe stomach pain after taking the trial medication, which included both tablets and injections. He was informed about possible side effects during the registration process but alleges that the risk of death was not disclosed. The police have summoned company officials for questioning and are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of death.
Syngene International's Response
Syngene International (search) has issued a statement expressing condolences to the family. The company stated, "An individual who participated in one of our pharmacokinetic studies in early December passed away suddenly at his residence due to a medical event. We are adhering to all clinical trial protocols and have reported the incident to the relevant authorities. Our deepest condolences go out to the family, and we are providing full support to both the family and the investigating authorities."
