Congo's 17th Ebola Outbreak: Bundibugyo Strain Confirmed as Death Toll Reaches 80

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo are racing to contain the country's 17th Ebola (search)Search disease outbreak, which has now claimed at least 80 lives in the eastern Ituri province. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (search)Search term (Africa CDC) confirmed the outbreak on Friday, initially reporting 65 deaths and 246 suspected cases. By Saturday, the death toll had climbed to 80 as health workers intensified screening and contact tracing efforts.

The outbreak is concentrated in three health zones: Mongwalu, Rwampara, and Bunia, the capital of Ituri province. Congolese Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba reported that eight laboratory-confirmed cases have been identified, including four deaths. Intense population movement, including mining-related travel, and ongoing security crises in the region compound the risk. Armed group attacks have killed dozens and displaced thousands in parts of Ituri province over the past year.

Kenya, which borders Uganda, has assessed a "moderate risk of importation" due to regional travel and has formed an Ebola (search)Search disease preparedness team while strengthening surveillance at all points of entry.

On-the-Ground Realities

Residents of Bunia have described a dire situation. "Every day, people are dying ... and this has been going on for about a week. In a single day, we bury two, three or even more people," said Jean Marc Asimwe, a Bunia resident. "At this point, we don't really know what kind of disease it is."

Another resident, Adeline Awekonimungu, urged government action: "My recommendation is that the government take this matter seriously and that it takes charge of the hospitals so that this matter can be brought under control."

Vaccination and Containment Challenges

While vaccines are now available for some Ebola (search)Search disease-causing viruses, access remains problematic in Congo due to structural barriers and funding constraints. Daniela Manno, clinical assistant professor at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, noted: "While Ebola remains a serious disease, outbreak prevention, response, and treatment have improved significantly over the past decade. There are now vaccines available for some viruses causing Ebola disease, which can help protect healthcare workers and reduce transmission when deployed rapidly around confirmed cases and their contacts in a strategy known as ring vaccination."

During last year's outbreak, which lasted three months, the WHO faced significant challenges in delivering vaccines, which took a week after the outbreak was confirmed. Health officials have also raised concerns about the impact of recent United States funding cuts. Ituri province is approximately 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from the capital Kinshasa, with poor road networks and active conflict involving Islamic State-backed militants. The Africa CDC has also identified gaps in contact listing as local authorities work to trace individuals potentially exposed to the virus.

This marks Congo's 17th Ebola (search)Search disease outbreak since the disease was first discovered near the Ebola River in 1976. It comes approximately five months after the previous outbreak was declared over in December, which resulted in 43 deaths.
