(Nasdaq: CPIX) announced the launch of its national sales promotion for Talicia®, an FDA-approved oral capsule for treating Helicobacter pylori (search) infection in adults. The specialty pharmaceutical company has assumed responsibility for distribution and sales promotion of the brand in the U.S. under a co-commercialization agreement with RedHill Biopharma.
Novel All-in-One Treatment Approach
Talicia represents a significant advancement in H. pylori treatment as the only all-in-one therapy containing omeprazole, amoxicillin and rifabutin. The drug has been recognized as a first-line option in the American College of Gastroenterology guidelines for H. pylori infections and received FDA approval in November 2019.

Addressing a Significant Medical Need
H. pylori infection affects approximately 35% of the U.S. adult population, with an estimated 1.6 million U.S. patients treated annually. The bacterial infection poses serious health risks, as it is classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Group 1 carcinogen and represents the strongest known risk factor for gastric cancer.
The infection contributes to between 70% to 90% of gastric cancer cases, with more than 27,000 Americans diagnosed with gastric cancer annually and approximately 11,000 related deaths in the U.S. each year. Globally, H. pylori affects more than 50% of the population and contributes to approximately 800,000 deaths per year. The bacterial infection is also a major risk factor for peptic ulcer disease (90% of cases) and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma.
Treatment Resistance Challenges
Current H. pylori eradication therapies face significant challenges, with failure rates of approximately 25-40% of patients who remain H. pylori-positive. This treatment resistance is primarily due to high resistance of H. pylori to antibiotics, especially clarithromycin, which is still commonly used in standard combination therapies.
Strong Intellectual Property Protection
Talicia benefits from robust patent protection extending through 2042, with additional patents and applications pending and granted in various territories worldwide. The drug received eight years of U.S. market exclusivity under its Qualified Infectious Disease Product (QIDP) designation. Beyond the U.S., Talicia has also received approval from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Health.
Commercial Strategy and Infrastructure
The launch expands Cumberland's specialty product portfolio and reflects the company's strategy of leveraging its established commercial infrastructure to drive growth from its differentiated, FDA-approved brands. Cumberland is utilizing its existing field sales force division with supporting marketing initiatives designed to increase awareness among gastroenterologists and other prescribing physicians.
