CuspAI Raises $100 Million Series A to Accelerate AI-Driven Materials Discovery for Healthcare and Sustainability
核心洞察
CuspAI (搜索) secured $100 million in Series A funding led by New Enterprise Associates (搜索) and Temasek (搜索), valuing the AI chemistry startup at $520 million.
The company has developed AI foundation models that can accelerate materials discovery from a decade-long process to just six months, with potential to reduce this to 1-2 months.
CuspAI (搜索) is partnering with major companies including Hyundai on sustainable energy applications and Kemira (搜索) on filtering PFAS (搜索) chemicals from water supplies.
CuspAI (搜索), an artificial intelligence startup developing foundation models for chemistry and materials discovery, has raised $100 million in Series A funding, positioning the company to accelerate breakthrough applications in healthcare, sustainability, and advanced manufacturing. The funding round was led by New Enterprise Associates (搜索) and Singapore sovereign wealth fund Temasek (搜索), with participation from Nvidia (搜索)'s venture arm NVentures, Samsung Ventures (搜索), and Hyundai Motor Group (搜索).
The investment values CuspAI (搜索) at $520 million, according to sources familiar with the deal, reflecting strong investor confidence in AI-driven materials discovery as a transformative technology for multiple industries including pharmaceuticals, clean energy, and semiconductor manufacturing.
Revolutionary Speed in Materials Development
CuspAI (搜索) has demonstrated the potential to dramatically accelerate materials discovery timelines that are critical for pharmaceutical and biotechnology applications. Chad Edwards, the company's cofounder and CEO, reported that CuspAI's AI foundation models can reduce the traditional decade-long process of developing novel materials with specific properties to just six months. The company projects further acceleration to 1-2 months within the next two years.
"At Microsoft, we used to say what really matters in breakthroughs in AI is scale and speed. And I think this team has both," said Lila Tretikov, a former deputy CTO at Microsoft (搜索) who is now a partner at NEA and led the investment into CuspAI (搜索).
The startup has developed what Edwards describes as "synthesis-aware generative AI models" that address a critical limitation in previous AI approaches to materials discovery. Unlike earlier attempts that often produced theoretical materials too difficult to manufacture, CuspAI (搜索)'s models are designed to generate materials that chemical and pharmaceutical companies can actually synthesize.
Strategic Partnerships Across Industries
CuspAI (搜索) has established partnerships that demonstrate the broad applicability of its technology across sectors relevant to healthcare and life sciences. The company has signed a partnership agreement with water treatment company Kemira (搜索) to develop new materials for filtering PFAS (搜索) (forever chemicals) from water supplies, addressing a critical public health concern.
The startup's collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group (搜索) focuses on "sustainable energy applications," with potential applications in battery materials and hydrogen fuel cell improvements. "With CuspAI (搜索) as our partner, we will leverage the power of AI to advance our performance and sustainability goals," said Keith Noh, vice president head of the ZERO1NE Group at Hyundai Motor Group. "We believe novel materials offer an extraordinary opportunity to accelerate progress towards a better, cleaner, and more efficient future."
Edwards indicated that CuspAI (搜索) is also exploring partnerships in the semiconductor industry, which could have implications for medical device manufacturing and diagnostic equipment development.
World-Class Scientific Leadership
The company has assembled an advisory board featuring some of the most distinguished figures in AI and materials science. The board includes Geoffrey Hinton, the Nobel Prize and Turing Award-winning deep learning pioneer, and Yann LeCun, Meta (搜索)'s chief scientist and fellow Turing Award winner.
CuspAI (搜索) recently announced the addition of Lord John Browne, former BP CEO and current chair of the Francis Crick Institute (搜索), and Martin van den Brink, former president and CTO of ASML (搜索), which manufactures lithography technology for advanced semiconductors.
The advisory board also includes Kristin Persson, a distinguished materials science professor at UC Berkeley who leads the Materials Project, a multinational effort using machine learning to discover properties of inorganic materials, and Verity Harding, former Google DeepMind (搜索) head of public policy and current director of the AI and Geopolitics Project at the University of Cambridge.
Breakthrough in Carbon Capture Technology
CuspAI (搜索)'s initial focus on direct air capture materials demonstrates its potential impact on environmental health. Working in partnership with Meta (搜索) and Georgia Tech (搜索), the startup helped create OpenDAC, described as the world's largest dataset on materials with potential for carbon dioxide capture, containing more than 100 million datapoints. These materials function like sponges, absorbing and sequestering carbon dioxide within their structure.
Competitive Landscape and Growth Strategy
The company operates in an increasingly competitive field of AI-driven materials discovery. CuspAI (搜索)'s $30 million seed round in June 2024 was the largest for a materials science AI startup at the time, though the sector has since seen significant investment activity with competitors like Lila Sciences raising $200 million and Periodic Labs securing $200 million at a $1 billion valuation.
CuspAI (搜索) plans to use the new funding to expand its team of approximately 30 employees and establish additional offices, with particular focus on Asia. The company is pursuing a dual strategy of developing materials to order for large partners while also advancing its own proprietary materials projects, though the emphasis has been on partner-driven development.
"In the early days, we thought, 'let's be commercial and find partners with clear problems and a clear route to market,'" Edwards explained, highlighting the company's focus on practical applications with immediate commercial viability.
