Derriford Hospital Tops UK Clinical Trial Recruitment Rankings with Over 45,000 Patients Enrolled

Derriford Hospital (search)Search term in Plymouth, the largest hospital in south-west England, has achieved the top position in the National Institute for Health and Care Research (search)Search term (NIHR) rankings for clinical trial recruitment, with more than 45,000 patients currently enrolled in lifesaving research. The figure represents a 35% rise on the previous year, placing the trust ahead of every other organisation in the country.

The research portfolio spans a broad range of conditions, including Parkinson's disease (search)Search disease, Huntington's disease (search)Search disease, and strokes, with more than 200 studies currently ongoing — from neonatal research to world-first trials for various diseases.

Patient Experiences and Clinical Impact

John Houghton, from Tavistock, has lived with Parkinson's for five years after first noticing problems with his right side during a Taekwondo training session. He is now involved in testing a new drug for Parkinson's as part of one of several clinical trials overseen by the hospital's neurology team.

"The tremor in my right hand is slightly worse — that's to be expected," Houghton said. "But the control in my hand has got better and my right leg doesn't drag anymore. If that's all there is after four years — I'm smiling."

Lucy Wright from Newquay, who has Huntington's disease (search)Search disease — an inherited genetic condition affecting the brain — is participating in a trial requiring lumbar punctures ten times over the year, brain scans, and regular blood draws. Her father and brother have also been diagnosed with the disease, and her father's deterioration now necessitates full-time residential care. "If it means we can slow down the disease or even improve things — it's more than worth it," she said.

Research Infrastructure and Economic Benefits

Dr Stephen Mullin, consultant neurologist at the hospital and assistant professor at Peninsula Medical School, highlighted the dual benefits of the research programme. "It will hopefully lead to treatments which will either improve the symptoms or slow down the progression of the disease," he said. "It also brings income into the trust, money that has been put back into the clinical services that deliver the trials and that results in day-to-day improvements in clinical care."

The research operation is strengthened by local clinical trials run on-site by Derriford's scientific staff, with patient samples processed by the hospital's own laboratories to keep as much research as possible within the institution.

Institutional Benefits and Future Ambitions

Prof Dan Martin, consultant in intensive care medicine at the trust, who recently involved Derriford patients in the largest intensive care trial in the world, articulated the broader institutional advantages. "We know in any institution which is delivering a high volume of research, overall the care becomes better for patients," he said. "And then there's the actual interventions themselves. Many of these will be lifesaving. The people receiving those treatments could arguably get a better or a more improved intervention sooner than would otherwise be available to them — and all here in Devon."

The trust reported that its research achievements are leading to global recognition, enabling it to attract leading clinicians and secure additional funding. Experts believe the benefits will extend beyond the hospital into the wider community through job opportunities and improved health outcomes. The trust's ambition is to expand research further by offering all patients who come through Derriford's doors the option to participate in a clinical trial.
