Cannabis-Based Products Show Promise in Alleviating Fibromyalgia Symptoms, Review Suggests

  • A systematic review of clinical trials indicates that cannabis-based products, including flower, can improve symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS).
  • The review analyzed data from 14 clinical studies and five review papers, revealing reductions in pain, fatigue, and depression without serious side effects.
  • Researchers emphasize the need for more comprehensive studies to establish the efficacy of cannabis in pain management and its impact on quality of life for FMS patients.
  • The findings support survey data indicating that fibromyalgia patients frequently use whole-plant cannabis and CBD products to manage their symptoms.
A systematic review published in Exploratory Research in Clinical and Social Pharmacy suggests that cannabis-based products, including whole-plant cannabis, may offer symptomatic relief for individuals suffering from fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). The international team of investigators analyzed data from 14 clinical studies and five review papers, finding that these products reduced pain and other FMS symptoms without causing significant adverse effects.
The study's authors concluded that medicinal cannabis products could improve musculoskeletal, somatic, and psychiatric symptoms such as pain, fatigue, and depression in FMS patients. They also noted the potential safety of these products. However, the authors emphasized the necessity for further comprehensive studies and clinical trials to solidify the real efficacy and effectiveness of cannabis in managing pain, enhancing quality of life, improving associated symptoms, and its effect on the use of other medications for managing chronic pain and safety concerns.
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory, and mood issues. Current treatments often involve a combination of medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes. Surveys indicate that many fibromyalgia patients already use cannabis and CBD products to self-manage their symptoms.
The review highlights a potential role for cannabis-based treatments in managing fibromyalgia symptoms, but stresses the need for more rigorous research to fully understand their efficacy and safety.
