Strategic Manufacturing Realignment
The Branchburg divestiture comes as Lilly executes the largest manufacturing expansion in its history, a $27 billion investment that more than doubles the company's U.S. manufacturing investment to over $50 billion. The expansion includes plans for four new U.S. manufacturing sites expected to be operational within the next five years, which will add 13,000 high-wage manufacturing and construction jobs.
Three of the planned new sites will focus on active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), addressing domestic production priorities important to the FDA, while the fourth will expand Lilly's global parenteral manufacturing network for future injectable therapies. However, the Branchburg facility "does not align with our long-term operational requirements," according to a company spokesperson.

The Branchburg location has faced regulatory scrutiny in recent years. In 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice (search) launched a criminal investigation into practices at the facility following reports of poor manufacturing practices and data falsification allegations. U.S. Food and Drug Administration (search) inspections in 2022 identified several quality control problems, with inspectors flagging an additional eight deficiencies in 2023.
Despite this regulatory history, Lilly emphasized that the facility "remains in good standing with the FDA," with manufacturing issues most recently under regulatory scrutiny in January 2024.
Employment Preservation Efforts
The company is actively seeking buyers who will maintain current staffing levels at the Branchburg site. "Our aim is to complete the sale before the end of the year," a company spokesperson stated, though the company declined to provide details about potential purchasers.
Digital Innovation Expansion
Concurrent with its manufacturing reorganization, Lilly has opened a new innovation site in Hyderabad, India, serving as a hub for digital and technology initiatives. The 220,000 square feet facility in Gachibowli focuses on artificial intelligence, automation, cloud computing, and software product engineering.
The Hyderabad site currently employs 100 people, with headcount expected to reach 1,500 over the next few years. Chief Information and Digital Officer Diogo Rau highlighted the strategic importance of the facility: "This expansion brings together top talent in AI, data science, and engineering to build the digital foundation that will accelerate the discovery and delivery of innovative medicines."
