Eli Lilly Partners with Cipla to Expand Tirzepatide Access in India Through Dual-Brand Strategy
核心洞察
Eli Lilly has signed an agreement with Cipla to market its blockbuster weight-loss drug tirzepatide under the brand name Yurpeak (搜索) in India, expanding access beyond Lilly's established presence.
The partnership allows Cipla to distribute tirzepatide in six dose strengths through pre-filled pen devices, priced identically to Lilly's Mounjaro brand which launched in India in March 2024.
This dual-brand strategy addresses India's growing diabetes (搜索) and obesity (搜索) burden, with over 100 million people living with diabetes in the country.
Eli Lilly has entered into a strategic partnership with Indian pharmaceutical company Cipla to expand access to its blockbuster weight-loss drug tirzepatide across India. Under the agreement announced Thursday, Cipla will market the medication under the brand name Yurpeak (搜索), creating a dual-brand strategy for the GLP-1 receptor (搜索) agonist in the Indian market.
Partnership Structure and Pricing
The collaboration establishes a clear division of responsibilities, with Lilly manufacturing and supplying the drug while Cipla handles distribution and promotion. Yurpeak (搜索) will be priced identically to Lilly's existing Mounjaro brand, maintaining consistent pricing across both brands in the Indian market.
The medication will be available in six dose strengths: 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, and 15 mg, delivered through KwikPen devices. Each pre-filled pen contains four fixed doses for once-weekly administration, allowing healthcare professionals to personalize treatment plans according to individual patient needs.
According to Lilly's pricing structure established when Mounjaro pens launched, the monthly costs range from ₹14,000 for the 2.5 mg strength to ₹27,500 for the highest dose strengths of 12.5 mg and 15 mg.
Market Expansion Strategy
"With India facing a growing burden of Type 2 diabetes (搜索) and obesity (搜索), broader availability of tirzepatide will ensure that more patients can benefit from this innovative therapy," said Winselow Tucker, President and General Manager of Lilly India.
The partnership aims to expand tirzepatide availability beyond cities where Lilly already has an established presence, leveraging Cipla's extensive distribution network across India. This represents Cipla's strategic entry into the obesity (搜索) care segment, building on its established presence in respiratory and chronic therapies.
Achin Gupta, Cipla's Global Chief Operating Officer, emphasized the company's commitment to obesity (搜索) care: "With the introduction of Yurpeak (搜索) (tirzepatide), we are stepping into obesity care with the same commitment and scale that have defined our efforts in respiratory and chronic therapies."
Clinical Profile and Market Context
Tirzepatide is the first and only dual GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist approved for Type 2 diabetes (搜索) and chronic weight management in adults with obesity (搜索) (BMI ≥ 30) or overweight (BMI ≥ 27) with one weight-related comorbidity.
The drug belongs to a class of therapies known as GLP-1 receptor (搜索) agonists that help control blood sugar and slow digestion, making people feel fuller for longer. Lilly initially launched Mounjaro in India in late March 2024 for diabetes (搜索) and obesity (搜索) in 2.5 mg and 5 mg vials, before receiving regulatory approval for the KwikPen device in June. The drug's sales more than doubled within months of its launch.
Competitive Landscape
The partnership comes as competition intensifies in India's diabetes (搜索) and obesity (搜索) treatment market. Novo Nordisk launched its weight-loss and diabetes drugs Wegovy and Ozempic, respectively, in India this year. Both medications contain the active ingredient semaglutide and compete directly with tirzepatide in the GLP-1 receptor (搜索) agonist class.
India represents a significant market opportunity, with over 100 million people living with diabetes (搜索). The dual-brand strategy for tirzepatide positions both Lilly and Cipla to capture a larger share of this growing market while addressing the substantial unmet medical need in diabetes and obesity (搜索) management across the country.
