Engitix Secures €21 Million Series A Extension to Advance ECM-Targeted Cancer and Fibrosis Therapies
核心洞察
Engitix (搜索), a London-based biotech company, closed a €21 million Series A extension led by billionaire investor Mike Platt's Netherton Investments (搜索) to advance its extracellular matrix-targeted therapeutics platform.
The company focuses on targeting disease-specific changes in the extracellular matrix as a primary driver of cancer and fibrosis, rather than traditional cell-based approaches.
Engitix (搜索) currently has three disclosed preclinical programs and two collaborative programs with Takeda (搜索) targeting advanced metabolic associated steatohepatitis fibrosis and fibrostenotic Crohn's disease.
Engitix (搜索), a British biotech company developing transformative therapies targeting the extracellular matrix (ECM) for cancer and fibrosis, announced the closing of a €21 million ($25 million) Series A extension financing. The round was provided by Netherton Investments (搜索), a fund investing on behalf of Mike Platt, co-founder and Managing Director of BlueCrest Capital Management (搜索).
The financing represents Platt's second public investment in Engitix (搜索), following his co-leadership of the company's $54 million Series A round in 2022. This continuity is notable given Platt's reputation as one of the most discreet figures in global finance, who rarely makes public-facing investments.
Unique ECM-Targeted Approach
Engitix (搜索)'s platform centers on the premise that in fibrosis and solid tumors, the extracellular matrix is not merely structural support but an active disease driver. The company begins with human patient tissue, strips it down to the acellular ECM scaffold, and uses proteomics and other readouts to map how diseased ECM differs from healthy tissue.
"We target disease-specific changes in the extracellular matrix, which is the abnormal tissue environment that actively drives both cancer and fibrosis," said Giuseppe Mazza, CEO and co-founder of Engitix (搜索). "In oncology, patients with desmoplastic tumours have particularly poor outcomes because the dense tumour matrix limits the effectiveness of current treatments."
This approach differs from traditional cell-based targeting strategies. While many companies focus on cells or individual pathways within the tumor microenvironment, Engitix (搜索) inverts this by using ECM itself, in a tissue-specific and disease-specific context, to discover targets and validate them.
"By targeting disease-specific ECM changes, we can anchor therapies directly to tumour tissue in hard-to-treat, desmoplastic cancers and aim to actively clear established scar tissue in fibrosis," Mazza explained. "This tissue-level approach allows us to address a fundamental cause of poor treatment response, rather than downstream effects."
Pipeline and Strategic Partnerships
The preclinical company currently maintains three disclosed programs: EGTX003 in fibrosis, EGTX004 in solid tumors, and EGTX006 (搜索) in advanced fibrosis at the discovery stage. Additionally, Engitix (搜索) has two confidential collaborative programs with Takeda (搜索) targeting advanced metabolic associated steatohepatitis (MASH) fibrosis and fibrostenotic Crohn's disease (FSCD).
The company also maintains a strategic drug discovery partnership with Dompé farmaceutici (搜索), established alongside the 2022 Series A round, which provides Engitix (搜索) access to Dompé's Exscalate drug discovery platform and computing resources.
Funding Strategy and Market Context
Mazza explained the rationale for structuring this as a Series A extension rather than a new round: "We are still preclinical and want the financing label to match the company's current stage; the series B is intended to be the step-up round once we are ready to enter the clinic and pursue clinical proof-of-concept, which typically supports a larger raise."
The financing places Engitix (搜索) within a broader pattern of European biotech funding activity in 2025. Comparable rounds include TargED Biopharmaceuticals in the Netherlands securing €21.5 million for targeted thrombotic disease therapies, while larger oncology-focused raises were reported for FoRx Therapeutics in Switzerland (€42 million), Adcytherix in France (€105 million), and Tubulis in Germany (€308 million).
Investor Involvement and Future Plans
According to Mazza, Platt maintains active involvement in the company as a board member and business mentor. "Mike is an active Board member and a valued business mentor. He helps shape our long-term strategy, stress-tests key decisions, and supports the team as we scale, while leaving day-to-day execution to management."
Mike Platt commented: "Engitix (搜索) has developed a compelling strategy at the intersection of data, biology, and drug development. I'm pleased to continue supporting Engitix as it advances its programmes in fibrosis and solid tumours."
The new proceeds will fund continued preclinical development across Engitix (搜索)'s proprietary ECM-targeted pipeline in solid tumors and fibrosis, while further expanding what the company describes as one of the largest proprietary ECM datasets in these diseases.
Founded in 2016, Engitix (搜索) represents one of the few companies building drug discovery platforms primarily around the extracellular matrix itself, alongside companies like Matrisome Bio and Switzerland's Tandem Therapeutics pursuing similar ECM-focused approaches.
