Bengaluru-based deep tech startup eNLife Research (搜索) has raised ₹6 crore in a seed funding round led by Piper Serica VC Fund (搜索), the company announced. The capital will be deployed to build and validate its blood-based biomarker platform, expand its R&D team, and advance its first diagnostic assay from prototype to clinical-grade validation.
The startup, co-founded in 2025 by Dr. Deepak Kumaran Nair — a professor at the Centre for Neuroscience at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) — along with Lt. Col. Jojo Jacob and Anish Mathew, is developing an AI-powered blood test designed to detect Alzheimer's disease (搜索) and other neurodegenerative conditions years before clinical symptoms emerge.
Closing the diagnostic gap in Alzheimer's care
"The biggest failure of Alzheimer's care today isn't the absence of treatments in trials; it's that we find patients a decade too late to use them," said Dr. Nair. "We started eNLife to close both gaps at once: detect the disease at the molecular stage through a simple blood draw that is both accessible and affordable."
The platform combines highly sensitive biomarker detection from accessible body fluids with machine learning algorithms trained to identify subtle correlations between these biomarkers. According to the company, the AI engine can detect early signs of disease progression up to 15 years before clinical symptoms manifest.
A faster, less invasive alternative
Unlike current diagnostic modalities such as PET scans, MRIs, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis — which are expensive, invasive, and not widely accessible — eNLife's test is designed to be administered through routine diagnostic centers and delivers results within two to five hours. The company is also developing next-generation assays capable of simultaneously tracking up to 100 biological markers for multiple forms of dementia and other neurodegenerative disorders.
Building India-specific biomarker datasets
eNLife is collaborating with researchers at leading Indian institutions, including IISc, the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Hyderabad, and the Centre for Brain Research (CBR) Bengaluru. These partnerships aim to develop biomarker datasets tailored specifically to Indian genetic and lifestyle risk profiles.
"India will have one of the world's largest ageing populations within a generation, and neurodegenerative disease is the burden we are least prepared for," said Rajni Agarwal, director at Piper Serica. The startup expects to begin filing patents over the next 9 to 18 months across biomarker binders, diagnostic assays, and its detection platform, marking the next phase in its effort to make early neurodegenerative disease detection accessible, scalable, and affordable.
