Ex-Legend CEO Ying Huang Takes Helm at K2 Therapeutics as Startup Secures $50M Seed Financing
核心洞察
Ying Huang, former Legend Biotech CEO who led Carvykti to become a nearly $2 billion blockbuster, has been appointed CEO of K2 Therapeutics (搜索).
K2 Therapeutics (搜索), formed by MPM BioImpact (搜索) in 2024, simultaneously announced $50 million in seed financing to in-license first-in-class and best-in-class therapeutic candidates.
The startup has already secured eight preclinical-to-clinical programs, including an anti-5T4 (搜索) antibody-drug conjugate from Adcoris (搜索) and a CD3 (搜索)×CDH6 (搜索) T-cell engager from Antengene (搜索).
K2 Therapeutics (搜索), a biotechnology startup formed in 2024 by investor MPM BioImpact (搜索), has named former Legend Biotech CEO Ying Huang as its new chief executive, the company announced Tuesday. The leadership transition comes alongside the closing of $50 million in seed financing aimed at building a portfolio of "high-potential, first-in-class and best-in-class" therapeutic candidates through in-licensing deals.
Huang brings a track record that includes one of the industry's most closely watched success stories. During his seven-year tenure at Legend Biotech, he oversaw the development and commercialization of Carvykti, a cell therapy for multiple myeloma (搜索) brought to market through a collaboration with Johnson & Johnson. K2 described that achievement as "one of the first commercially successful China-to-U.S. drug launches." Carvykti generated close to $2 billion in sales last year.
"At Legend Biotech, Ying led one of the most consequential success stories in modern biotechnology, transforming a China-originated innovation into a globally approved blockbuster therapy and helping reshape industry perceptions of where world-class innovation can emerge," said Ansbert Gadicke, K2's chairman and managing partner of MPM, in a statement.
A pipeline built through cross-border deals
K2 has already been active in pursuing assets. The company reports eight programs spanning preclinical to clinical testing, several of which originated from deals struck this year with China-based biotechs Adcoris (搜索) and Antengene (搜索). Those agreements delivered K2 rights to an antibody-drug conjugate in early-stage testing for cancer, a bispecific T-cell engager, and an option for a third undisclosed candidate.
The Adcoris (搜索)-licensed drug targets 5T4 (搜索), a protein overexpressed on many solid tumors. The Antengene (搜索) program, ATG-106, is designed to bind CD3 (搜索), a common T-cell target, along with CDH6 (搜索), a protein implicated in the spread of multiple cancers.
Hub-and-spoke strategy
K2 will operate under a hub-and-spoke organizational structure, in which a central entity houses drugs across different subsidiaries. While this model has drawn some investor skepticism over the years, it offers flexibility to more quickly execute deals or take individual subsidiaries public. As part of their licensing agreements, both Adcoris (搜索) and Antengene (搜索) received cash payments as well as equity stakes in K2 subsidiaries.
The company said it expects to expand its portfolio over time through "disciplined asset acquisition, strategic capital deployment and focused development execution." Huang's appointment signals that K2 intends to replicate the cross-border innovation blueprint that has gained traction among biotechnology investors looking to China and other regions for assets to build new companies around.
