Critical Voice on Regulatory Decisions
Despite his industry ties, Tidmarsh has demonstrated willingness to critique FDA regulatory decisions. In an April opinion piece, he criticized key decisions made by Dr. Peter Marks, the former vaccine chief who was forced out in March under the Kennedy administration. Specifically, Tidmarsh opposed the accelerated approval of Biogen's controversial Alzheimer's drug Aduhelm and questioned the decision to expand approval of Sarepta Therapeutics' Duchenne muscular dystrophy (search) treatment Elevidys.
The Elevidys controversy has intensified recently, with the FDA last week asking Sarepta Therapeutics to halt all shipments after three patients died from liver failure (search) following treatment. The company has refused to completely stop shipments, continuing to provide the therapy to patients with the condition who can still walk, citing data showing "no new or changed safety signals" within that group.

Tidmarsh assumes leadership during a period of unprecedented upheaval at the FDA. Under Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s oversight, approximately 2,000 FDA staffers have been laid off as part of widespread cuts to the federal health workforce.
