FDA Clears First Dedicated 3T MRI System for Neonatal Imaging
核心洞察
The FDA has granted 510(k) clearance for Eyas Medical Imaging (搜索)'s Ascent³ᴹᴿ (搜索) system, the first high-field 3T MRI dedicated to neonatal and infant imaging.
The compact system can be installed directly in NICUs, eliminating the need to transport fragile newborns to separate MRI suites.
The device was developed using expertise from Cincinnati Children's (搜索), where over 1,700 infant MRI scans were conducted with prototype systems.
The US Food and Drug Administration has granted 510(k) clearance for Eyas Medical Imaging (搜索)'s Ascent³ᴹᴿ (搜索) neonatal magnetic resonance imaging system, marking a significant advancement in pediatric medical imaging. The device represents the first high-field, three Tesla (3T) MRI system engineered specifically for the anatomy of neonates and infants.
Revolutionary Design for Critical Care Settings
The Ascent³ᴹᴿ (搜索) addresses a longstanding challenge in neonatal care by offering a compact whole-body 3T MRI system that can be installed directly in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). This design eliminates the need to transport fragile newborns from the NICU to separate MRI suites within hospitals, a process that has historically posed risks to critically ill infants.
The system features a 3T magnet that enables comprehensive and detailed scans of vital organs including the heart, lungs, abdomen, and brain. Unlike adult-sized MRI systems, the Ascent³ᴹᴿ (搜索) is specifically designed to address the limitations encountered when imaging neonates, offering improved imaging and diagnostic options for clinicians treating these vulnerable patients.
Technical Innovation and Clinical Validation
The system operates virtually helium-free and does not require a quench pipe or external venting, simplifying installation and maintenance requirements. A key feature includes a detachable patient table that doubles as a transport device, providing workflow flexibility within the NICU environment.
Development of the Ascent³ᴹᴿ (搜索) was based on extensive clinical expertise from Cincinnati Children's (搜索) Hospital, where more than 1,700 infant MRI scans were conducted using prototype systems. This substantial clinical experience informed the final design and functionality of the commercial system.
The technology integrates operating software, advanced electronics, and pulse sequences from Philips Medical Systems Nederland (搜索), combining specialized neonatal imaging capabilities with established MRI technology platforms.
Commercial Launch and Market Impact
"510(k) clearance marks a significant milestone for the company and reflects our mission to enable healthcare professionals to save more babies' lives with state-of-the-art, precision imaging," said Matt Storer, president and CEO of Eyas Medical Imaging (搜索).
The company is currently scaling up operations with plans to commercialize the Ascent³ᴹᴿ (搜索) in the United States later this year. The device has not yet received regulatory approval for commercial availability in other countries, with the initial market focus remaining on the US healthcare system.
