(search) (MMI) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (search) has approved a supplement to its Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) for the REMIND study, clearing the way for expanded patient enrollment in what the company describes as a first-of-its-kind clinical investigation. The regulatory milestone, announced July 30, 2026, follows the FDA's review of 30-day safety data from the initial cohort of treated patients and permits enrollment to proceed from up to five patients to the full early feasibility study (EFS) population of 15 patients.
The REMIND study — an acronym for Robotic-Enabled Microsurgical Intervention for Neurodegenerative Disease — is a global, prospective early feasibility study designed to collect safety and feasibility data on the Symani Surgical System (search). The investigational approach uses robotic-enabled microsurgical techniques to re-establish lymphatic drainage pathways in the deep cervical lymph nodes (dCLNs) of patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (search) who have confirmed lymphatic abnormalities.

A Novel Mechanistic Approach to Neurodegeneration
The REMIND study targets a growing area of scientific interest: the role of the brain's lymphatic system — sometimes referred to as the glymphatic system — in clearing metabolic waste products implicated in neurodegenerative conditions. By using the Symani Surgical System (search) to restore lymphatic drainage through the deep cervical lymph nodes, MMI is pursuing a surgical strategy distinct from the pharmacological approaches that have dominated Alzheimer's research and treatment development.
The Symani Surgical System (search) combines what MMI describes as the world's smallest wristed microinstruments with tremor-reducing and motion-scaling technologies. The platform is designed for open, soft tissue micro-level surgery and can address microvascular repair and lymphatic repair. In Europe and Asia-Pacific markets, the system also addresses peripheral nerve repair.
Regulatory Context and Future Directions
MMI emphasized that the safety and effectiveness of the Symani Surgical System (search) for lymphatic reconstruction for brain disease has not been established by the FDA, and the device remains investigational for this specific use. The Symani System is authorized for use in the United States by the FDA for other indications and holds CE Mark certification in Europe.
As enrollment continues, data generated through the REMIND study is expected to inform future research directions, including the potential for a larger pivotal trial.
