FDA Clears Neptune Medical's Triton 1 Robotic Endoscopy System for Colon Procedures

The FDA has granted 510(k) clearance to the Triton 1 Robotic Endoscopy System (search) for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures throughout the colon, developer Neptune Medical (search) announced. The Burlingame, California-based company said the clearance positions the robotic platform for use in screening, surveillance and diagnostic colonoscopies, as well as more complex interventions in the colon such as endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).
The Triton 1 System is designed to deliver robotic precision, stability and control throughout the entire colon, with the goal of ensuring that every patient can receive consistently thorough screening and therapy. According to the company, the system is intended to elevate any endoscopist's capabilities rather than replace them.
CARE 1 Trial Meets Both Primary Endpoints
The clearance follows results from the first-in-human, interventional CARE 1 study (NCT06935734), which enrolled 50 adults who underwent screening, surveillance or diagnostic colonoscopy with the Triton system at a single center in Poland and were followed for 14 days after the procedure. The study was presented earlier this year in a late-breaking oral presentation at Digestive Disease Week 2026.
CARE 1 met both of its primary endpoints, with no adverse events and 100% cecal intubation. The system also demonstrated an adenoma (search) detection rate of 54.2% — exceeding the 35% industry threshold — as well as a polyp detection rate of 67.5% and 100% polypectomy success. Investigators reported no patient repositioning, no abdominal pressure and no conversion to manual colonoscopy.
Using the NASA Task Load Index, the system was associated with a 67% lower average physical and mental burden for endoscopists compared with manual colonoscopy.

"Triton showed us the possibility of 1 system that can screen and treat anywhere in the colon, efficiently, thoroughly, and with minimal burden. Dynamic Rigidization Platform Underpins the System
Triton is built on Neptune Medical (search)'s Dynamic Rigidization (search) technology, the same underlying mechanism used by the company's Pathfinder Endoscope Overtube (search). According to the 510(k) filing for Pathfinder, the technology consists of a flexible overtube connected via a stopcock to a vacuum line; venting the enclosed vacuumable volume to the atmosphere keeps the overtube flexible, while connecting it to a vacuum source causes it to hold its shape and transition to a rigid state.
That mechanism allows an endoscope to advance or withdraw through the tube with minimal disturbance to the surrounding anatomy, which helps limit the looping that commonly destabilizes manual scope navigation through the colon. Triton extends this rigidizing platform into a robotic system, pairing it with robotic control of scope navigation to give endoscopists a more stable, hands-off approach to reaching and maneuvering throughout the entire colon.

Addressing the Limits of Conventional Colonoscopy
Colorectal cancer (search) is the second leading cause of cancer death in the US and is increasingly affecting adults under age 50. Colonoscopy remains the gold standard for colorectal cancer diagnosis, prevention and treatment, as it is the only procedure that allows for both detection and removal of precancerous lesions in a single session.
However, conventional endoscopes have inherent design limitations that can make them difficult to control even for gastroenterologists with years of specialized training. Scope instability can lead to incomplete visualization of the colon, missed adenomas and an increased risk of cancer development, while manual endoscopy can also create significant physical stress for the clinician. The CARE 1 ergonomic findings and the system's adenoma (search) detection rate speak directly to those two pain points.
Neptune Medical (search) said it will continue clinical research of the current-generation system to support its path toward commercialization, while gathering endoscopist feedback to inform development of its next-generation platform.
