Promising Early Results with Gabapentin
Initial studies have demonstrated encouraging outcomes with gabapentin, a medication traditionally used for seizure management. The research shows that using escalating doses of gabapentin can increase the time to first opioid use and eliminate opioid use entirely in up to two-thirds of patients.
"Gabapentin has properties that diminish nerve conduction and can therefore reduce pain associated with mucositis (search)," explains Dr. Singh. This mechanism of action makes it particularly well-suited for addressing the neuropathic component of mucositis pain.
Trial Design and Recruitment Goals
The national trial aims to recruit up to 200 patients who are suffering from mucositis (search) resulting from head and neck cancer (search) treatment. This patient population represents those at highest risk for developing severe mucositis due to the anatomical location of their tumors and the intensive nature of their treatment regimens.
