The market is expanding at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24.5%, driven by both established products and emerging therapies in development.
Tatiana Kolesnikova, director of oncology and hematology at GlobalData (search), presented these findings at the Clinical Trials in Oncology (CTO) East Coast 2025 conference held on July 8-9 in Boston. The analysis reveals that currently marketed products will contribute approximately 70% of this growth trajectory, while assets currently in the pipeline are expected to generate the remaining 30%.
CAR T-Cell Therapies Lead Blood Cancer Treatment
Genetically modified cell therapies (search) (GMCTs), primarily consisting of CAR T-cell therapies (search), have demonstrated particular success in treating blood cancers (search). These therapies have shown efficacy in multiple myeloma (search), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (search), and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (search) (ALL), with their success driving interest in label expansions for earlier lines of treatment.
However, CAR T therapies face significant operational challenges. Kolesnikova noted that these treatments require long production times and substantial investment in specialized treatment centers for administration, creating barriers to broader adoption.
"Efforts are underway to overcome these challenges by modifying production and using alternative approaches," Kolesnikova explained during the conference presentation.
China Dominates Clinical Development Activity
The geographic distribution of clinical trial activity reveals China's dominant position in GMCT development. Chinese companies are conducting approximately 720 clinical trials exploring GMCTs, nearly double the 370 trials underway in North America, primarily in the United States. The disparity is even more pronounced when compared to Europe, where only 112 trials are currently active.
"There are twice as many clinical trials exploring GMCTs in China, at around 720, versus 370 in North America, mostly in the US. The differential is even larger in Europe, almost seven times more trials underway in China than the 112 in Europe," Kolesnikova stated.
This extensive research and development activity in China could present significant competitive challenges to established therapies in the broader cell therapy market if these agents receive approval in other markets.
Market Geography and Growth Projections
Despite China's leadership in clinical development, the United States continues to dominate the broader oncology cell therapy market, accounting for more than 60% of current sales. However, China represents the fastest-growing market segment, with a CAGR of 60% compared to the overall market growth rate of 24.5%.
By 2031, China is anticipated to become the second-largest market globally, accounting for 9% of total cell therapy sales. This rapid growth trajectory reflects both the country's substantial investment in cell therapy research and its large patient population.
The market expansion is supported by the success of existing therapies and the robust pipeline of investigational treatments across multiple cancer types. As production challenges are addressed and treatment accessibility improves, the cell therapy market is positioned for continued growth throughout the decade.
