GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drugs Enter Clinical Trials for Obese Cats as Pet Care Shifts Toward Medicalization

Two U.S. biotechnology companies are now testing experimental GLP-1 (search) weight-loss treatments for overweight cats, marking one of the earliest efforts to bring the blockbuster drug class that transformed human obesity (search) care into companion animal medicine. The studies signal a broader shift in the roughly $200 billion U.S. pet economy, where spending is increasingly moving from premium food toward medicalized care.
Akston Biosciences (search) is sponsoring a Cornell University clinical study of a once-weekly GLP-1 (search) therapy for overweight and obese cats, while San Francisco-based OKAVA Pharmaceuticals (search) has begun testing a long-acting implant designed to deliver the medication continuously for up to six months in a trial dubbed "MEOW-1." Neither product is approved, and both remain early-stage clinical trials that must demonstrate safety and efficacy before reaching veterinarians.
"Feline obesity (search) is one of the most common yet least effectively treated health issues in veterinary medicine," Akston CEO Todd Zion said in November when the company announced the clinical trial.
The Scale of Pet Obesity (search)
According to the Association for Pet Obesity (search) Prevention, 61% of cats and 59% of dogs evaluated by U.S. veterinary professionals in 2022 were classified as overweight or obese. Cats present a particularly difficult challenge: unlike dogs, they cannot simply be taken on longer walks, often resist dietary changes, and can be difficult to medicate consistently. These factors make GLP-1 (search) therapies potentially attractive if clinical trials prove successful.
The Akston-sponsored trial at Cornell will evaluate approximately 70 overweight or obese cats over roughly three months. OKAVA's study is testing an implant inserted by a veterinarian that releases medication for up to six months. Top-line results from both trials are expected later this year.
From Premiumization to Medicalization
Morgan Stanley analyst Simeon Gutman characterized the trend as "an expansion from premiumization into medicalization, rather than owners abandoning premium food." The firm estimates U.S. pet food will total roughly $65 billion in 2026, while overall U.S. pet spending is projected to grow from about $196 billion in 2025 to more than $240 billion by 2030.
Gutman cautioned, however, that investors should not assume pet GLP-1s will mirror the explosive commercial success of human obesity (search) drugs. "The most overhyped part is the assumption that pet obesity drugs will replicate the human GLP-1 (search) market in terms of penetration and pricing," he said, noting that veterinary medicine remains largely an out-of-pocket expense and affordability will likely constrain uptake.
Instead, Gutman suggested the more credible near-term scenario is growth from the broader obesity (search) ecosystem, including structured weight-management programs, prescription diets, and treatment of obesity-related conditions, with a standalone GLP-1 (search) market for pets likely taking longer to emerge.
Food Companies Position for Health-Focused Growth
Major pet-food companies are not waiting for obesity (search) drugs to arrive. Nestlé's latest pet product strategy centers on what it calls "Personalized Health," with new products targeting digestive health, healthy aging, and longevity. The company has highlighted that cat ownership is growing roughly three times faster than dog ownership in recent years, with premium cat food outpacing premium dog food growth. Nestlé also says its newer nutritional products can extend healthy lifespan in cats by more than a year.
Animal-health companies including Zoetis, Elanco, and IDEXX (search) are positioned to benefit through therapeutics and diagnostics, while Nestlé Purina, Colgate-Palmolive subsidiary Hill's, and Freshpet are expanding health-focused nutrition. Online retailer Chewy has also broadened into pharmacy subscriptions and veterinary clinics.
The Affordability Question
Whether owners would pay for obesity (search) drugs may ultimately depend less on the science than on price. Amy, a Dallas cat owner whose five-year-old cat Felix is overweight, said cost would be the deciding factor. "It would have to be affordable," she said.
For now, the technology remains firmly in the experimental stage. But the arrival of multiple feline clinical trials suggests one of the pharmaceutical industry's most influential drug classes is beginning to cross into veterinary medicine, even as established pet-food companies race to convince owners that healthier diets, supplements, and longevity-focused nutrition can deliver many of the same benefits before prescription drugs ever reach the market.
