The acquisition strengthens GSK's respiratory pipeline with a novel activin signaling inhibitor that has completed Phase I healthy volunteer clinical trials and is preparing to begin studies in pulmonary arterial hypertension (搜索) (PAH) and pulmonary hypertension due to heart failure (搜索) with preserved ejection fraction (PH-HFpEF).
Addressing Critical Unmet Medical Need
Pulmonary hypertension (搜索) represents a significant global health challenge, affecting approximately 82 million people worldwide across multiple disease forms. The progressive, life-shortening disease is characterized by high blood pressure in the lungs, with early symptoms including breathlessness, fatigue, and chest pain that eventually lead to heart failure (搜索). Despite the substantial patient population, treatment options remain limited, and the five-year survival rate is only around 50%.
The global market for PH therapies is forecast to reach $18 billion by 2032, with activin signaling inhibitors expected to account for 50% of this market, highlighting the commercial potential of this therapeutic class.
Enhanced Safety Profile Through Selective Targeting
HS235 targets the activin receptor (搜索) signaling pathway, a clinically validated therapeutic target in PH. The drug's key differentiator lies in its enhanced selectivity, which reduces binding to BMP9 (搜索) and BMP10 (搜索) - ligands associated with adverse events such as bleeding and telangiectasia (broken blood vessels). The $950 million cash acquisition is subject to customary regulatory clearances under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act in the US and the Competition Act in Canada, along with a filing under the Investment Canada Act. In the US, the addressable patient population for PAH and PH-HFpEF is approximately 100,000 people, representing a substantial commercial opportunity for the combined entity.
With HS235 having completed Phase I trials and poised to begin patient studies, the acquisition positions GSK to accelerate development of what could become a transformative treatment for millions of patients affected by this life-threatening group of diseases.
