Facility Enhancement Details
The Clinical Research Facility GMP Unit (CRF GMP Unit) serves as a dedicated cleanroom environment for manufacturing Investigational Medicinal Products (search) (IMPs) and unlicensed Specials for clinical trials. Currently recognized for its regulatory T-cell immunotherapy (search) work, the unit is scaling up to accommodate a wider portfolio of advanced therapies, including stem cell-derived photoreceptors (search) and adherent cell products (search).
The expansion includes the addition of two new ISO Class 7 cleanrooms and Grade A processing areas equipped with Class II Biosafety Cabinets or isolators. Enhanced material flow systems, controlled storage, and improved waste handling capabilities are integral components of the upgrade.
Technical Infrastructure and Design
Cleanroom design and engineering specialist Scitech (search) has supported the project from concept through full detailed design and into the final construction stages. The company's scope included designing cleanrooms capable of full-room biodecontamination, integrating CO₂ and compressed air infrastructure, and implementing controlled access with electronic pressure monitoring.
The facility layout ensures segregated flows for personnel and materials, maximizing GMP efficiency and regulatory compliance while enabling cost-effective delivery of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (search) (ATMPs). The design achieves compliance with UK and EU regulatory frameworks for clinical trial manufacturing.
Construction Challenges in Live Hospital Environment
The project presents unique logistical challenges as construction occurs within the operational 15th floor of a live hospital building. This requires close coordination with NHS staff and departments to minimize disruption to patient care and ensure safety during construction.
"The onsite coordination has been to the millimetre, one of the most complex threading of utilities we have done, to fit into the space available," said a Scitech (search) spokesperson. "The work has been carried out safely on the 15th floor of an operational building with patients, families, doctors, and NHS staff working in rooms around, above, and below the site."
