Pfizer Canada ULC and BioNTech SE said Health Canada has authorized an XFG variant-adapted COMIRNATY for active immunization against COVID-19 (搜索) in people aged 6 months and older. The updated vaccine targets the Omicron XFG lineage, in line with public health recommendations for the 2026-2027 season to more closely match contemporary circulating variants.
The authorization rests on the cumulative body of evidence previously submitted by the two companies, including clinical, non-clinical and real-world data supporting the safety and effectiveness of COMIRNATY. The vaccine uses BioNTech's proprietary mRNA technology and is designed to generate an immune response against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (搜索). BioNTech is the Marketing Authorization Holder for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 (搜索) vaccine and its adapted vaccines in the United States, the EU, the United Kingdom and other countries, and holds emergency use authorizations or equivalents elsewhere.
Pfizer Canada said it has secured sufficient inventory to fulfill all contractual commitments with federal and provincial vaccination programs and continues to manage inventory and distribution to support equitable access across Canada. The vaccine will be available through various distribution channels in the coming days and weeks; individuals not eligible through a publicly funded program may be able to purchase it through participating pharmacies. The companies note that COMIRNATY, including the updated formulation, may not protect all individuals and should be used per the updated Canadian Product Monograph.
