HHS Announces Major Expansion of Nutrition Education in U.S. Medical Schools

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Education have announced a sweeping expansion of their initiative to embed nutrition education into the core of American medical training, with eight leading accrediting, assessment, and board organizations now committing to measurable reforms.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. characterized the effort as "one of the most important course corrections in modern American medicine" during a press briefing, emphasizing that the initiative aims to train physicians to "address the root causes of diseases, not simply manage their consequences."
The organizations that have signed on include the National Board of Medical Examiners (search), the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (search), the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners, the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, and the American Board of Medical Specialties.
USMLE to Incorporate Nutrition Science
A landmark component of the reforms is the integration of nutrition science into the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). According to Kennedy, approximately 15% of content across the examination sequence will assess nutrition science and its clinical application using evidence-based standards. "For the first time, nutrition science will have a meaningful presence across all three steps of the United States Medical Licensing Examination," Kennedy said.
Medical Schools Expand Commitments
HHS also announced that 19 additional medical schools have voluntarily committed to requiring at least 40 hours of nutrition education or a competency equivalent beginning this fall. These institutions join 54 others that had previously pledged when the initiative was first announced in March, bringing the total to 73 medical schools across the country. The continuum now works with 36 states and over 52,000 medical students receiving enhanced nutrition education.
The push for reform is grounded in stark data. According to HHS, diet-related chronic diseases (search) are now responsible for nearly 60% of U.S. deaths, with an estimated one million Americans dying from diet-related chronic diseases each year. Despite this burden, a 2022 survey cited by HHS found that medical students reported receiving just 1.2 hours of formal nutrition education annually. Before these commitments, three-fourths of U.S. medical schools did not require nutrition courses, and just 14% of residency programs mandated a nutrition curriculum.
NIH Challenge and Funding
Complementing the educational reforms, HHS has launched a new $2.1 million National Institutes of Health challenge to "identify, reward, and scale the most effective approaches for integrating nutrition into medical and nursing education." Kennedy described this as the first phase of a $5 million initiative led by NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya and Director of the Office of Nutrition Research Dr. Drew Bremer.
Expert Perspectives
Jessica Snowden, MD, MS, MHPTT, vice chancellor for research at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, noted that the initiative "recognizes something we all see every day in our clinical work and in our communities: nutrition is not a side issue in health care. It's fundamental to many of the things we need to have a healthy lifespan." She highlighted the opportunity to "connect scientific evidence and nutrition education with real-world implementation."
Robert Glatter, MD, FACEP, FAAEM, an assistant professor at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, told Healio that the call for greater nutrition education "represents an important opportunity to align physician training with the clinical realities of chronic disease prevention and management." He emphasized that "strengthening nutrition education in medical school is therefore not curricular ornamentation; it is core clinical training."
Glatter further articulated the practical competencies at stake: "Medical students should graduate being able to obtain a focused dietary history, recognize major dietary risk patterns, interpret nutrition labels, screen for food insecurity and deliver brief, evidence-based counseling that is culturally and economically realistic."
Under Secretary of Education Nicholas Kent underscored the pragmatic nature of the reforms, stating, "While these commitments are groundbreaking, they are also rooted in common sense. From adding required nutrition hours to integrating competencies across all 4 years and revising assessments, these actions promise real progress toward our shared goal of a healthier America."
