Collaborative Research
The CoE will collaborate with leading institutions in India, bringing together expertise in Ayurveda, diabetes (search), and medical research. These partnerships will facilitate interdisciplinary research and the translation of research findings into clinical practice. Collaborating institutes include Central Ayurveda Research Institute (search) (CARI); Samatvam: Science and Research for Human Welfare Trust; and Prayoga Institute of Education Research.
Clinical Trial Details
A randomized, active comparator-controlled clinical trial will be conducted over two years to assess the efficacy of two new ayurvedic formulations, Mustadi Ghana Vati (search) and Varadi Ghana Vati (search), in prediabetes (search) and type II diabetes (search). The trial has already begun enrolling subjects, following ethics committee approval, registration on the Clinical Trial Registry of India (CTRI), and the establishment of a Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB).
Mechanistic Studies
In conjunction with the clinical trials, systematic in vitro and in vivo studies will be pursued to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of protein glycation and oxidation. These studies will involve analyzing blood samples from participants, examining the role of different adipose tissues (brown, white, beige), and assessing responses to therapy. Additionally, the ayurvedic formulations will undergo fingerprinting and chemical analysis to identify potential active molecules.
Leadership and Vision
The CoE is led by Professor Navakanta Bhat from the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE), IISc (search), and co-PI Assistant Professor Sona Rajakumari from the Department of Developmental Biology and Genetics (DBG). They envision establishing a strong program of integrative medicine at the IISc post-graduate medical school, building on prior work on albumin glycation and oxidation.
By generating scientific evidence for the efficacy of ayurvedic approaches, the Centre aims to pave the way for its integration into mainstream healthcare, potentially improving the lives of millions with diabetes (search).
