Insurance-Supported Integrative Oncology Program Delivers Clinically Meaningful Symptom Relief for Cancer Patients

A new study from University Hospitals Connor Whole Health (search) demonstrates that an insurance-supported integrative oncology program can produce clinically meaningful improvements across multiple cancer (search)-related symptoms, offering a scalable model for embedding supportive therapies within routine oncology care. The findings, published in JCO Oncology Practice, represent the first full analysis of the Connor Whole Health Integrative Oncology (CWHIO) Symptom Management Clinic's implementation and outcomes.
The study evaluated the clinic's first 16 months of operation, from June 2023 to September 2024, during which 1,924 integrative oncology treatments were delivered to 291 patients. The program employed a hybrid model combining insurance-billed physician consultations and massage therapy visits with low-cost group acupuncture sessions and philanthropic support for non-billable services.
Clinically Meaningful Symptom Reductions
Single treatment encounters yielded significant reductions in moderate-to-severe symptoms across all measured domains. Pain scores dropped by an average of 2.08 points, while stress decreased by 2.70 points and anxiety by 2.28 points. Depression scores fell by 2.54 points, nausea showed the largest improvement at 3.61 points, and fatigue declined by 1.42 points.
"Integrative oncology bridges the best of conventional cancer (search) treatment with evidence-based supportive therapies like acupuncture. This program demonstrates how acupuncture can help address symptom burden and improve quality of life when incorporated into comprehensive cancer care," said Jacob Wolf, ND, LAc, Dipl. High Patient Satisfaction and Growing Demand
Patient satisfaction metrics were exceptionally strong throughout the evaluation period. Among those surveyed, 87.1% strongly agreed they were satisfied with the services received, 85.5% strongly agreed they would refer others to the program, and 82.3% strongly agreed the services supported effective symptom management.
Demand for care trended consistently upward, with weekly visit volumes frequently exceeding 40 encounters and ultimately peaking at 57 encounters per week following the introduction of group acupuncture and individualized reiki sessions.
A Hybrid Model Addressing Access Barriers
The CWHIO clinic, led by an integrative oncologist and embedded within the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center (search) network, aligned its treatment plans with American Society of Clinical Oncology and National Comprehensive Cancer (search) Network guidelines for integrative therapies, including acupuncture and massage for pain, anxiety, depression, and fatigue.
A defining feature of the model is its approach to financial accessibility. Initial physician consults and massage therapy are billed through insurance, while group acupuncture is offered at a self-pay rate of $36.85—below national averages. This stands in contrast to most U.S. integrative oncology programs, which rely heavily on out-of-pocket payments and consequently create disparities in patient access.
