Over the two-year study period, participants receiving intensive treatment showed significantly less thickening of the carotid arteries' innermost linings compared to the control group. "For many, many years, dentists have been focusing on the teeth, forgetting the rest of the body, and physicians have been focusing on the body, forgetting that there are teeth," Tonetti observed. "They are really two worlds that have been separated and need to go back together for the benefit of patients."
The research provides evidence that routine periodontal interventions may serve as an underrecognized approach to maintaining cardiovascular health by reducing systemic inflammation and preserving blood vessel function in healthy individuals with severe gum disease (search).
