Iraq Launches Major Cancer Drug Manufacturing Initiative with 50% Price Reduction Target

Iraq is preparing to inaugurate the largest cancer drug production facility in the region next month, marking a significant milestone in the country's efforts to expand domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing and reduce treatment costs for patients.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani will open the facility in Baghdad's Abu Ghraib district at the beginning of December, according to Hamoudi al-Lami, industry and development advisor to the prime minister. The factory represents the largest production capacity facility of its kind in the region and is designed to address the critical need for affordable cancer treatments.
Dramatic Cost Reduction for Cancer Treatments
The new facility promises to deliver cancer medications at substantially reduced prices, with al-Lami asserting that "drug prices will be 50 percent lower than imported drugs." This price reduction initiative comes as part of Baghdad's broader strategy to "provide medicines, especially cancer medicines that are expensive" at subsidized prices for citizens.
The factory will obtain pharmaceutical formulations from Italian companies as part of the government's "Localization of Pharmaceutical Industries" program. Al-Lami indicated that "the coming period will also witness an increase in the number of cancer drugs, and cover the needs of hospitals for these drugs."
Comprehensive Health City Development
The cancer drug facility represents one component of an ambitious five-factory medical "Health City" complex, according to Mayada al-Khaykani, executive director of the National Health Factory. The comprehensive development includes:
- The existing National Health Factory for sanitizers and medical supplies
- A cancer and immunology drug plant opening next year
- A dialysis-products factory
- A plasma-derivatives plant
- A general-pharmaceuticals factory
Al-Khaykani told Shafaq News that Iraq's drug industry has "clearly advanced in recent years," crediting government support and Health Ministry policies that encouraged investment and local production.
International Technology Partnerships
All facilities within the Health City complex will be constructed to international standards, with preliminary agreements already signed with British and Dutch companies for technology transfer to Iraq. "Baghdad is working to attract additional foreign firms to expand and revive domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing," al-Khaykani stated.
The initiative addresses a critical healthcare challenge, as cancer represents the leading cause of death worldwide while health establishments struggle to find treatments and develop better diagnostics. In Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, key factors contributing to increased cancer cases include environmental pollution and lifestyle issues, making early diagnosis widely advised to prevent the condition from reaching critical stages.
The pharmaceutical expansion aligns with broader healthcare infrastructure development in the region, including the Kurdistan Region's plan for a major cancer hospital in Erbil, with Prime Minister Masrour Barzani laying the foundation in September 2024 for what is considered the largest cancer hospital across Iraq, set for completion in 2026.
