The approval covers PreemieFort Enteral Solution for very low birth weight (search) (VLBW) infants and other neonates with specific medical conditions, including congenital gastrointestinal disorders (search), congenital heart diseases (search), and those recovering from gastrointestinal surgery. This decision validates the critical role of human milk-based nutrition for the most fragile patient populations.

Clinical Evidence Supporting Approval
The regulatory decision was informed by clinical evidence from the JASMINE trial, a Japanese-led Phase III, randomized, controlled, open-label, multicenter study that evaluated growth and safety associated with Prolacta's 100% human milk-based fortifiers. The trial demonstrated significantly better growth in VLBW infants with no change in morbidity or mortality compared to standard care.
Japan's Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) conducted the review, applying stringent regulatory and quality requirements typically reserved for pharmaceutical products. The approval encompasses three Prolacta products: PreemieFort Enteral Solution 6, PreemieFort Enteral Solution 8, and PreemieFort Enteral Solution CF, which provide concentrated nutrition while retaining human milk bioactivity.
