The Health and Global Policy Institute (search) (HGPI) recently convened two installments of its "30-minute Health Policy Update" series, bringing together non-partisan Diet members and leading medical experts to examine pressing health policy challenges facing Japan. The briefings, held on an irregular basis, focused on hearing loss (search) policy and regional cancer (search) care disparities, respectively, under the overarching theme of "Considering the Future of Health and Medical Policy with Industry, Government, Academia, and Civil Society."
The initiative drew support from a bipartisan group of promoters spanning both houses of the Diet, including Representatives Keishi Abe, Shinichi Isa, Naoyuki Ito, Satoshi Umemura, Hiroaki Tabata, Mitsuko Numazaki, Gaku Hashimoto, and Toru Fukuta from the House of Representatives, alongside members of the House of Councillors.
Addressing Hearing Loss (search): Current Status and Policy Challenges
Professor Koichiro Wasano of the Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at Tokai University School of Medicine delivered a lecture titled "Addressing Hearing Loss (search) in Japan: Current Status and Policy Challenges." The presentation provided Diet members with an evidence-based overview of the hearing loss landscape in Japan, examining both the epidemiological dimensions and the policy frameworks currently in place. A subsequent Q&A session allowed legislators to engage directly with the subject matter, exploring potential legislative responses to identified gaps.
Regional Cancer (search) Care: Equalization Versus Centralization
In a separate briefing, Professor Kazuhiro Tateda, Professor Emeritus and Specially Appointed Professor for Research at the Faculty of Medicine, Toho University, joined Professor Masaki Tanabe of the Department of Infection Control and Infectious Disease Crisis Management at Mie University's Graduate School of Medicine. Their joint lecture, "The Current State of Cancer (search) Care in Regional Japan: Considering Two Key Concepts of 'Equalization' and 'Centralization,'" examined the inherent tension between distributing cancer care services equitably across Japan's geography and concentrating specialized resources at centers of excellence.
A Multi-Stakeholder Approach to Health Policy
HGPI emphasized that the objective of these briefings was to deepen learning for non-partisan Diet members using concrete and verifiable data across themes with a high degree of public interest, including cancer (search), preventive medicine, internal and surgical diseases, pediatrics, and perinatal care. The format was designed to foster an equal exchange of opinions on next steps, working more closely with the legislature than ever before and with a future-oriented vision.
