Strategic Partnership with Altria
The MOU with Altria (search) represents a broad-based collaboration that extends beyond traditional tobacco products into emerging categories. According to the announcement, the partnership will cover "all areas including nicotine pouch (search) and health functional foods (search)," positioning both companies to capitalize on evolving consumer preferences and regulatory landscapes in the tobacco and related products sectors.
Strong Financial Performance Drives Growth Strategy
KT&G (search)'s partnership announcement comes amid robust financial performance that has enabled the company to pursue aggressive growth targets. The global cigarette business achieved five consecutive quarters of "triple growth" in revenue, operating profit, and sales volume as of the company's Q2 earnings report. Most notably, adjusted operating profit for the first half of 2025 showed a sharp year-over-year growth of 127.8%.
CEO Kyung-man Bang attributed this performance to the successful implementation of fully local value chains, a priority initiative since his inauguration in March 2024. The company has set targets for double-digit operating profit and revenue growth based on its solid global business foundation.
Enhanced Shareholder Returns
Alongside the strategic partnership announcement, KT&G (search) unveiled significant enhancements to its shareholder return policies. The company set the minimum annual dividend per share at 6,000 KRW, representing an increase of 600 KRW from the previous year. Additionally, KT&G plans to pursue share repurchase and cancellation amounting to 260 billion KRW, utilizing resources from the liquidation of non-core assets such as real estate starting September 24th.
This represents a year-over-year increase of 100 billion KRW in share repurchases. Combined with the dividend increase, KT&G (search) will provide a total of 276 billion KRW in additional shareholder returns, representing 171% of the prior year's level.
Capital Allocation Strategy
CEO Bang outlined an upgraded "shareholder return distribution principle" designed to maximize both corporate and shareholder value. The strategy includes implementing a total payout ratio of 100% or higher, maintaining a dividend payout ratio of 50% or higher, setting a lower limit for dividend yield, and conducting elastic share repurchases throughout the year when share prices are considered undervalued compared to long-term intrinsic value.
KT&G (search) has already completed the cancellation of 10.4% of shares as of 2023, with the proportion of cumulative shares canceled expected to grow when the planned repurchase and cancellation is executed.
