Lilly's Oral Obesity Drug Foundayo Captures Over 30% of New US Patients, Challenging Novo's Wegovy Pill
核心洞察
Eli Lilly said its oral obesity (搜索) drug Foundayo (搜索) has captured more than 30% of new US patients starting oral weight-loss medicines since its April 2026 launch.
Novo Nordisk's Wegovy pill initially held roughly 90% of the US oral obesity (搜索) market, but the segment is now becoming a two-player competition.
Foundayo (搜索) showed a 12.4% average weight reduction at the highest dose in the ATTAIN-1 trial and beat oral semaglutide on A1C and weight in ACHIEVE-3.
Eli Lilly said its newly launched oral obesity (搜索) drug Foundayo (搜索) has captured more than 30% of new US patients starting oral weight-loss medicines, a notable early gain against Novo Nordisk's Wegovy pill, according to Reuters. Novo CEO Mike Doustdar said in August that the company estimated the Wegovy pill had captured about 90% of the country's oral obesity market despite competition from Foundayo, making Lilly's rapid share capture a sign that the oral GLP-1 (搜索) segment is becoming a two-player competition rather than a Novo-dominated market.
Investors are closely tracking demand for oral obesity (搜索) drugs, which could expand the weight-loss market by appealing to patients reluctant to use injections and by easing some supply challenges associated with injectable therapies. Novo said in January it expects oral drugs to make up more than a third of GLP-1 (搜索) weight-loss treatment use by 2030, and analysts expect the overall obesity treatment market to exceed $100 billion annually in the US alone by that year.
Launch Pricing and Commercial Positioning
Foundayo (搜索) was launched in the US in April 2026. The drug starts at $149 per month for self-pay patients and can cost as little as $25 for eligible commercially insured patients, while Medicare beneficiaries can access it through the GLP-1 (搜索) Bridge program at $50 per month. Lilly's SEC filing states that Mounjaro and Zepbound already represented 65% of its revenue in the first six months of 2026, underscoring both the importance of the incretin franchise and the opportunity for Foundayo to broaden Lilly's cardiometabolic revenue base.
The oral formulation carries a practical advantage in that it can be taken at any time of day without food or water restrictions. In the ATTAIN-1 trial, Lilly's clinical data showed an average 27.3-pound, or 12.4%, weight reduction at the highest dose among patients who remained on treatment.
Diabetes Data and Regulatory Submissions
The commercial opportunity could expand further if Foundayo (搜索) gains indications beyond obesity (搜索). Lilly reported that in the ACHIEVE-3 trial, Foundayo produced a 57.1% greater relative reduction in A1C and a 73.6% greater relative reduction in body weight compared with oral semaglutide 14 mg. Lilly has submitted Foundayo for type 2 diabetes (搜索) in the US, EU and Japan, potentially expanding the addressable market beyond weight management.
Maintenance Potential Within Lilly's Portfolio
Early oral-market traction appears to complement Lilly's existing injectable franchise rather than simply cannibalizing it. A Lilly trial found that patients switching from maximum-tolerated Wegovy to Foundayo (搜索) maintained all but 0.9 kg of their previous weight loss after one year, while patients switching from maximum-dose Zepbound to Foundayo maintained all but 5.0 kg. That suggests Foundayo could serve as a maintenance or lower-burden treatment within Lilly's broader obesity (搜索) portfolio, increasing lifetime value per patient rather than limiting the opportunity to new prescriptions.
Medicare Pilot and Generic Competition
Lilly's injectable GLP-1 (搜索) obesity (搜索) treatment Zepbound has also seen preference among patients in the US government's Medicare obesity drug pilot launched in July, Lilly Executive Vice President Ilya Yuffa said at the Morgan Stanley healthcare conference in New York. Yuffa said 60% to 70% of patients enrolled in the program, which allows eligible beneficiaries to obtain weight-loss drugs for a $50 monthly co-pay, are new to the treatments. Medicare is for people aged 65 and older or with disabilities and covers about 66 million people.
Outside the US, Lilly faces new competition in India and Canada, where generic versions of Novo's blockbuster obesity (搜索) and diabetes treatments — Wegovy and Ozempic — cost as much as 70% less. Yuffa said the launches have simply made the market larger. "When the market expands significantly through generic, share declines. But the overall volume, absolute volume, is continuing to grow for Mounjaro in those markets," he said. Mounjaro is Lilly's brand name for tirzepatide in both the obesity and diabetes segments outside the US.
