Lupin Limited announced on September 28, 2026 that it has received tentative approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (搜索) for its New Drug Application for Apixaban Oral Suspension 1.25 mg/mL. The product was cleared through the 505(b)(2) regulatory pathway, which is reserved for new formulations of previously approved drugs.
The oral liquid formulation contains apixaban, the active ingredient in Eliquis (apixaban), which is marketed by Bristol Myers Squibb (搜索). Lupin's version provides an alternative administration option for adult patients requiring anticoagulation therapy, including those who may have difficulty swallowing tablets.
"This tentative approval reflects our continued focus on developing differentiated medicines that address meaningful patient needs," said Vinita Gupta, CEO of Lupin. "Apixaban oral suspension expands the ways in which this important therapy could be administered, while reinforcing our commitment to building a differentiated portfolio."
Manufacturing and Launch Conditions
Upon final approval, the product will be manufactured at Lupin's Somerset, New Jersey facility. The company said the U.S.-based site leverages its domestic manufacturing expertise to support high quality standards and supply reliability for the American market.
Tentative approval does not permit immediate commercialization. Final approval remains subject to resolution of outstanding patent litigation or expiration of the innovator's patent exclusivity, and to general manufacturing inspection requirements. Until final approval is granted, no revenue can be recognized from the product, and the timeline for a U.S. commercial launch has not been disclosed.
Positioning Within Lupin's U.S. Portfolio
The approval adds a liquid delivery option to Lupin's U.S. portfolio in the anticoagulation segment. The company has maintained rapid regulatory progress in the U.S. market, securing FDA approval for Modafinil tablets on September 4, 2026 and final approval for Pitolisant tablets on August 17, 2026.
Lupin is a global pharmaceutical company headquartered in Mumbai with products distributed in more than 100 markets. Its portfolio spans generics, complex generics, specialty medicines and biosimilars, with leadership positions in the U.S. and India across cardiovascular, respiratory, diabetes, gastrointestinal and women's health. The company operates 15 manufacturing facilities, six research centers and employs more than 26,000 professionals.
Sector Context
The Indian pharmaceutical sector is shifting toward specialized generics and complex liquid formulations to counter structural price erosion in standard solid oral medicines in the U.S. Anticoagulants such as apixaban represent a large therapy class, and patient-friendly delivery mechanisms may offer a protective competitive position. Lupin has framed the approval as part of a strategy to build a differentiated portfolio targeting high-barrier, value-added products rather than commoditized generics.
Key risks cited around the program include patent disputes that could delay final commercialization, general manufacturing inspection risks across facilities, and broad systemic price erosion in the U.S. generic pharmaceutical space.
