The freeze-dried artificial blood, called ErythroMer, addresses a critical gap in emergency care where tens of thousands of Americans bleed to death annually before reaching hospitals.
Revolutionary Powder-to-Blood Technology
Dr. Allan Doctor, a professor-scientist leading the research, has created a synthetic blood that can be stored as a powder for years at room temperature and reconstituted with water in under a minute. "It's designed so that at the moment it's needed, a medic can mix it with water and within a minute you have blood," Doctor explains.
The innovation centers on hemoglobin extracted from expired blood and enclosed within protective fat bubbles, essentially creating artificial red blood cells. This protective barrier represents a crucial advancement over previous synthetic blood attempts, which failed due to the toxicity of exposed hemoglobin to organs.
"We have to veil the hemoglobin inside a cell. It's an artificial cell that makes it safe and effective," Doctor says. The resulting product is shelf-stable for years and easily transportable, enabling transfusions at accident scenes where traditional blood storage is impossible.
Promising Animal Trial Results
Laboratory testing has demonstrated remarkable success in animal models. Doctor's team has tested their artificial blood on hundreds of rabbits, successfully replacing up to 90% of their blood volume with the synthetic version. In recent demonstrations, hemorrhaging rabbits showed rapid recovery of vital signs within minutes of receiving ErythroMer transfusions.
"Almost immediately, a monitor tracking the rabbit's vital signs show his heart rate, blood pressure and other important metrics have recovered from near death to nearly normal," according to observations during testing. The treated animals quickly resumed normal behaviors, including movement and drinking water.
Military and Emergency Applications
The Defense Department is investing more than $58 million to fund a consortium developing Doctor's synthetic blood alongside other emergency medical components. Col. Jeremy Pamplin from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (search) emphasizes the critical need: "The No. 1 cause of preventable death on the battlefield is hemorrhage (search) still today. That's a real problem for the military and for the civilian world."
Doctor estimates that 30,000 people die annually in the United States from bleeding before reaching hospitals, highlighting the urgent medical need his innovation could address. The synthetic blood's universal donor properties make it compatible with any blood type and even different species, expanding its potential applications.
Path to Clinical Implementation
ErythroMer functions as a "bridging therapy" designed to stabilize patients until they reach hospitals where natural blood is available. Doctor acknowledges that the synthetic version lacks the complete enzyme profile of natural red blood cells, making it suitable specifically for resuscitation rather than long-term replacement.
Doctor, who co-founded KaloCyte (search) to develop the technology and serves as the company's chief scientific officer, hopes to begin human trials within two years. If FDA approval is obtained, the synthetic blood could become commercially available within five to eight years.
While experts remain cautiously optimistic given the field's history of promising but ultimately unsafe artificial blood products, the current approach shows significant potential. Tim Estep, a scientist at Chart Biotech Consulting (search), notes: "I think it's a reasonable approach, but because this field has been so challenging, the proof will be in the clinical trials."
