Patent Portfolio Expansion
The newly granted patents span major markets including the United States, Europe, Australia, Japan, China, and India. The five patents cover diverse aspects of Medicenna's Superkine technology:
U.S. Patent No. 12,338,269 B2 protects IL-2 superagonists in combination with anti-PD-1 (search) antibodies, with additional grants in Australia and Japan and allowances in Canada. This patent provides crucial coverage for MDNA11, currently being evaluated in the ongoing Phase 1/2 ABILITY-1 study.
U.S. Patent No. 12,274,735 covers IL-4 (search) fusion formulation for treatment of CNS tumors (search), with parallel protection granted in Switzerland, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. This patent solidifies commercial exclusivity for bizaxofusp (MDNA55) in brain cancer (search) treatment.
Three additional patents include methods for producing Th9 T cells (in-licensed from Stanford (search)), superagonists and antagonists of IL-2 (also from Stanford), and IL-4 (search) receptor-binding fusion proteins (co-owned with NIH).

Superkine Technology Platform
Medicenna's technology focuses on developing highly selective versions of IL-2, IL-4 (search), and IL-13 Superkines. The company's long-acting IL-2 Superkine, MDNA11, demonstrates superior affinity toward CD122 (search) (IL-2 receptor beta) with no CD25 (search) (IL-2 receptor alpha) binding, preferentially stimulating cancer-killing effector T cells and NK cells.
Bizaxofusp, the company's IL-4 (search) Empowered Superkine, has been studied in five clinical trials enrolling over 130 patients, including a Phase 2b trial for recurrent glioblastoma (search). The therapy has obtained FastTrack and Orphan Drug status from the FDA and FDA/EMA, respectively.

With these new grants, Medicenna's global intellectual property portfolio now comprises 86 granted or allowed patents, supporting a robust and diverse clinical pipeline. The company expects to share additional clinical data from the ABILITY-1 clinical trial during the remainder of 2025.
The patent protection extends across Medicenna's broader platform, including early-stage MDNA209 IL-2β biased IL-2/IL-15 Super-antagonists for autoimmune and graft-versus-host diseases, BiSKITs (Bifunctional SuperKine ImmunoTherapies), and T-MASK (Targeted Metalloprotease Activated SuperKine) programs designed to treat immunologically "cold" tumors.
