Merck and Protillion Biosciences Ink $510 Million AI-Driven Biologics Discovery Partnership
核心洞察
Merck & Co. (搜索) has entered a multi-target drug discovery collaboration with Protillion Biosciences (搜索) valued at up to $510 million in milestone payments.
The partnership leverages Protillion's Prot-MaP platform, a megascale data generation technology that feeds massive training sets to protein design AI for optimized biologics discovery.
Protillion's platform enables identification of biologics with sophisticated therapeutic profiles, including pH-dependent sweeping and multi-target specificity, difficult to achieve with traditional methods.
Merck & Co. (搜索), known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, has signed a multi-target discovery collaboration and license agreement with AI drug design specialist Protillion Biosciences (搜索), the companies announced on June 16, 2026. The deal, valued at up to $510 million in biobucks, brings together Protillion's proprietary platform and Merck's global expertise in the discovery of novel therapeutic candidates.
Under the terms of the agreement, Protillion will receive an undisclosed upfront payment and is eligible to receive research, development, and commercial milestone payments tied to the successful development of multiple therapies.
The Prot-MaP Platform: Megascale Data Meets AI
At the heart of the collaboration is Protillion's proprietary Prot-MaP technology, a megascale data generation platform purpose-built to deliver massive, just-in-time training sets to protein design AI. The platform enables the quantitative analysis of protein libraries with what the company describes as unprecedented throughput, characterizing millions of variants per run while avoiding the common pitfalls of model overfitting.
According to the release, this next-generation approach "enables the identification of optimized biologics with sophisticated therapeutic profiles—such as pH-dependent sweeping and multi-target specificity—that are difficult to achieve with traditional methods."
"Powerful emerging technologies offer the potential to transform the speed and precision with which we characterize protein landscapes and identify novel therapeutic candidates," said Juan Alvarez, Ph.D., Vice President of Discovery Biologics at Merck Research Laboratories. "Protillion's platform offers a compelling opportunity and we look forward to working with the team to advance these programs."
Strategic Context and Leadership
The Protillion collaboration follows a series of significant deals from Merck earlier in 2026, including a $1 billion partnership with Google Cloud aimed at transforming the enterprise, a $20 million inflammatory bowel disease (搜索) drug discovery deal with Quotient, and an $838 million biobucks collaboration with Infinimmune to discover antibodies for undisclosed targets.
Protillion has been in a period of rapid growth, recently hiring industry veteran Bob Hollingsworth as Chief Scientific Officer. Hollingsworth most recently served as CSO at Shoreline Therapeutics and previously held scientific leadership roles at Pfizer, GSK, and AstraZeneca's MedImmune. The company continues to expand its team and facilities to support both its internal pipeline and high-value strategic partnerships.
"This relationship underscores the power of our platform to solve complex protein engineering challenges," said Curtis Layton, Ph.D., CEO and co-founder of Protillion Biosciences (搜索). "We are thrilled to work alongside the Merck team to deliver better medicines to patients faster."
"Merck is a global leader in biopharmaceutical innovation, making them an ideal partner to deploy our technology," Layton added.
