Microplastics Accumulate in Human Brains at Alarming Levels, New Research Shows

A research team at the University of New Mexico has documented that microplastic particles are accumulating in human brain tissue at concentrations far exceeding those found in other organs, with levels that have risen sharply over the past eight years.
The findings, published in February 2025, reveal that brain tissue collected in 2024 contained a median of roughly 4,800 micrograms of plastic per gram of tissue — approximately 0.48% of the tissue's weight. Lead author Matthew Campen, a professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the university, described the volume as roughly equivalent to an entire standard plastic spoon distributed throughout the brain.
"There's much more plastic in our brains than I ever would have imagined or been comfortable with," Campen said.
Brain versus other organs
When the team analyzed postmortem brain, liver, and kidney samples, they found plastic particles in every single body with absolutely no exceptions. However, the brain samples stood apart: concentrations of plastic in the frontal cortex tissue ran 7 to 30 times higher than in liver or kidney samples taken from the exact same bodies.
The researchers employed advanced infrared and electron microscopy techniques capable of detecting smaller nanoplastic particles. Conventional microscopy typically misses particles below 5 micrometers, and this methodological advance likely explains why brain concentrations appear so much higher than in earlier studies of other organs, including the placenta and testes, which used less sensitive detection methods.
A rising trajectory
The team compared 28 brain samples collected in 2016 against 24 collected in 2024 and found concentrations had increased by approximately 50% over the eight-year span. The researchers say this rate roughly tracks the growth of plastic waste in the environment over the same period. Liver tissue showed a similar upward trend, while kidney tissue did not change significantly.
"We think this is simply mirroring the environmental buildup and exposure," Campen said.
Independent reviewers have flagged limitations in the dataset. The full comparison rests on only two data points eight years apart — 2016 and 2024 — with no samples from the intervening years. A single jump between two snapshots is suggestive, not conclusive, evidence of a steady upward trajectory. The total sample size of 52 brain specimens plus matched liver and kidney tissue is also modest relative to the sweeping language some coverage of the study has used.
The dementia (search) connection
The most attention-grabbing finding involved a separate set of 12 brain samples from people diagnosed with dementia (search). Plastic concentrations in those samples ran notably higher than in the broader sample set, with the team observing visible deposits along blood vessel walls and within brain immune cells.
Different reports on the study have cited the dementia (search)-associated increase at anywhere from three to ten times the baseline concentration. This range is wide enough that no single multiplier should be treated as precise.
Campen cautioned that dementia (search) might actually cause the plastic buildup, rather than the other way around, because the condition impairs the brain's normal waste clearance mechanisms. A brain that cannot effectively clear out its own metabolic byproducts may simply struggle to clear out plastic particles as well.
"These studies still don't allow us to conclude that there is a causal link between the presence of nanoplastics or microplastics (search) and health impacts," the researchers wrote.
Reason for cautious optimism
One detail in the data offers a different perspective: plastic concentrations did not increase with age, meaning older brains did not contain more plastic than younger ones. Campen reads this as evidence that the body retains some capacity to clear these particles over time, rather than simply storing them indefinitely.
"Our findings provide some reason for optimism. The observation that plastics are not higher in older individuals compared to younger individuals suggests that our bodies do clear or eliminate these micro, nano plastics," Campen said.
Broader research context
The New Mexico study adds to a growing body of research on microplastics (search) and human health. A 2024 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, conducted by Italian researchers, found that among more than 300 patients who underwent carotid artery procedures, those with higher levels of plastics-laden plaque were more likely to suffer strokes, heart attacks, or sudden death during the following three years.
Heather Patisaul, a neurobiologist and scientific director at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, characterized the current state of evidence: "Right now it's a chicken-and-egg problem. Did you get sick because of microplastics (search)? Or did your body pile up a bunch of microplastics because you were already sick?"
To date, Patisaul said, the strongest evidence of harm includes the Italian study linking bits of plastic in humans to cardiovascular diseases, with research into possible relationships between microplastics (search) and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia (search) close behind.
The American Chemistry Council (search), the chief trade group for plastics manufacturers, contends academic researchers have not proven the industry's products are hazardous. Ross Eisenberg, president of the council's plastics division, has pointed to an FDA statement that "current scientific evidence does not demonstrate that levels of microplastics (search) or nanoplastics detected in foods pose a risk to human health."
In April, however, the Department of Health and Human Services (search) announced it will spend $144 million to develop uniform testing methods and study how to remove microplastics (search) from the body, with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stating the agency "is taking decisive action to confront microplastics as a growing threat to human health."
Ultimately, the New Mexico study establishes with certainty that plastic is entering human brain tissue. What remains unknown is exactly what it does to the people carrying it.
