Dr. Sam Geller of Quakertown Veterinary Clinic, one of the participating sites, has enrolled approximately 50 dogs and is continuing to accept more participants.
Mechanism of Action
The drug works by activating pathways in the body that are typically stimulated by calorie restriction. This approach aims to provide the benefits of calorie restriction—known to improve both canine and human health—without the need to limit food intake. According to Dr. Brennen McKenzie, Director of Veterinary Medicine at Loyal (search), "The way that this drug works is essentially to activate some of the same pathways in the body that caloric restriction activates, but in a way that is safer and more convenient."
The medication is designed to help preserve metabolic health by potentially preventing insulin resistance (search) and managing fats and lipids in the body. Half of the dogs in the clinical trial receive the active drug, while the other half receive a placebo, allowing the FDA to measure a "reasonable expectation of effectiveness."

The study aims to include over 1,000 dogs across the country. Researchers are examining how long the drug could extend life, with the research period spanning four years. The nationwide study is specifically enrolling larger dogs who are at least 10 years old.
