The geographic concentration of stem cell transplant services in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch means many patients must relocate for extended periods during treatment and recovery. CMV infections can prolong these hospital stays, keeping patients away from their families longer.

The consultation period runs from March 5 through March 19, 2026, with feedback submissions accepted at consult@pharmac.govt.nz.
