The recommendation follows NICE's revision of its value appraisal framework, part of a broader UK-U.S. agreement last year that secured zero tariffs on British pharmaceutical products and medical technology in exchange for increased drug spending and changes to assessment criteria. The new framework is designed to widen access to treatments previously rejected on cost grounds.
Elahere will be made available to patients under a confidential commercial agreement between AbbVie (搜索) and the state-run National Health Service. NICE estimates that around 270 patients will be eligible for the drug in the first year, rising to approximately 420 by year three.
Clinical Evidence and Dosing
In a late-stage study of 453 patients, Elahere demonstrated a clinically meaningful survival benefit. The drug extended median survival to 16.9 months and delayed disease progression to 5.6 months, compared with 13.3 months of survival extension and nearly four months of progression delay observed with standard chemotherapy.
Elahere is administered once every three weeks and has a more manageable side-effect profile than chemotherapy, according to NICE. As an antibody-drug conjugate, the therapy is designed to precisely target cancer cells while limiting damage to healthy tissue — a mechanism that has earned it the "guided missile" descriptor.
Patient Access and Funding Pathway
Critically ill patients whose cancer has stopped responding to standard chemotherapy will now be able to access Elahere through the NHS. The drug will be funded initially through the Cancer Drugs Fund before transitioning into routine commissioning, which will occur 90 days after final guidance is issued.
