The company announced Wednesday that it will build a 46,000 square foot manufacturing site at 2101 Shady Oak Drive, representing a $280 million investment that includes $200 million in specialized equipment and $70 million in facility improvements. Construction is scheduled to begin later this year with completion expected by 2028.
Revolutionary Cancer Treatment Technology
The Denton facility will serve as Novartis' fifth radioligand therapy (search) (RLT) manufacturing site in the United States, focusing on the production of next-generation cancer (search) and tumor (search) treatments. CEO Vas Narasimhan emphasized the transformative potential of this technology, stating that radioligand therapy has the capacity to "revolutionize" cancer care.
"The addition of our fifth RLT manufacturing site in the US strengthens our ability to meet growing demand, building the capabilities needed to deliver these next-generation treatments with the speed and precision they require," Narasimhan said in a statement.
Strategic Location and Economic Impact
The facility will occupy a three-building complex on a 20-acre site that has remained vacant since 2009, when its previous tenant, U.S. Radiopharmaceuticals (search), vacated the property. The site is currently owned by Kensington Title-Nevada LLC.
Novartis committed to creating at least 150 jobs in bioengineering, advanced manufacturing, quality and operations as part of the agreement. The project is projected to generate nearly $5 million in revenue for Denton over the next decade, according to city officials.
Incentive Package and Municipal Support
The Denton City Council approved a $3.2 million incentive package in December to secure the pharmaceutical company's investment. The package includes a 50% tax abatement for 10 years on new improvements and a Chapter 380 agreement providing grants for job creation and a sales tax rebate on construction materials.
Denton Economic Development Director Brittany Sotelo highlighted the strategic importance of this investment for the city's economic diversification efforts. "This is going to generate additional opportunities for the city of Denton," Sotelo told the council, noting that while Denton had been years behind other North Texas municipalities in life sciences development, the Novartis facility could serve as a catalyst for further sector expansion.
Broader U.S. Manufacturing Strategy
The Denton location represents one of seven new facilities Novartis plans to establish across the United States as part of its comprehensive $23 billion investment program. Over the past 10 months, the company has initiated work on four new manufacturing and research facilities, begun three plant expansions, and announced two additional sites.
Sotelo emphasized the competitive advantage Denton offers to life sciences companies, particularly regarding land availability. "There's more opportunities for life science companies, potentially pharmaceutical companies, because we have land available," she explained. "A lot of these companies want to own land versus lease."
The facility's establishment comes as North Texas continues to attract significant life sciences investments, with Abbott Laboratories announcing a $500 million expansion of its manufacturing and research facilities in Irving as part of a broader regional growth trend in the sector.
