Expanding Trial Access and Capacity
Since its establishment in 2017, NECTA has demonstrated remarkable growth in both capacity and patient reach. The alliance has increased the annual number of available trials from 150 to more than 180 over the past three years, directly correlating with the government's increased investment. More than 800 patients have successfully accessed early-stage clinical trials through the network across an expanding range of cancer (search) types.
Coordinated by the Garvan Institute of Medical Research with funding support from Cancer Institute NSW (search), NECTA operates as a state-wide network connecting doctors, researchers, clinical trial specialists, and hospitals. The alliance focuses on early-phase trials that represent the critical first step in testing new therapies in humans following extensive laboratory and pre-clinical research.
Streamlined Access Through Innovation
NECTA has revolutionized patient access to clinical trials by implementing a streamlined screening and referral system that requires only a blood test instead of more invasive tumor DNA testing. This simplified approach has proven particularly beneficial for patients with limited treatment options, offering hope and alternative pathways when conventional therapies have been exhausted.
The network's geographic reach extends beyond metropolitan areas, with approximately one in four patients accessing trials living outside major cities. This regional accessibility addresses a critical gap in cancer (search) care, ensuring that innovative treatments reach patients regardless of their location within NSW.
Patient Success Stories
Julian from Soldiers Point, north of Newcastle, exemplifies NECTA's transformative impact. Diagnosed with stage four metastatic esophageal cancer (search) in 2019, Julian faced poor prospects until securing placement in the NECTA program in 2022. The trial provided access to groundbreaking treatment not otherwise available in Australia.
"Through the NECTA network, I found hope when the outlook wasn't good," Julian said. "The trial gave me access to cutting-edge science that wouldn't otherwise be available in Australia for years. My tumours shrank to less than a centimetre, so then I was a candidate for surgery."
Four years post-diagnosis, Julian maintains an active lifestyle, playing pickleball three times weekly, paddling, and traveling. "These trials have let me live life to the full, enjoying each extra day that I'm blessed with," he noted.
Leadership Perspectives on Clinical Trial Networks
Professor Tracey O'Brien AM, NSW Chief Cancer (search) Officer and CEO of Cancer Institute NSW (search), emphasized the broader significance of early-phase trials beyond individual patient outcomes. "Access to early-phase clinical trials is not just about hope, it's about progress," she stated. "Every breakthrough that saves lives tomorrow begins with a trial today. Early-phase clinical trials are the critical first step in turning discoveries into treatments, generating the evidence that drives drug development and deepens our understanding of cancer."
Professor Anthony Joshua, Lab Head at the Garvan Institute and Head of Medical Oncology at St Vincent's Hospital Sydney (search), highlighted the network's role in addressing systemic barriers. "Early phase trials can offer another chance for patients who have few options left. But these trials are complex, and access can depend on where a patient lives or whether their doctor is aware of suitable studies. NECTA helps remove those barriers."

The alliance has proven instrumental in accelerating the translation of laboratory findings into clinical applications. Professor Joshua noted that "clinical trial networks such as NECTA are an incredibly powerful resource, with transformative benefits to advance our research. The alliance has made it possible to translate our laboratory findings into clinical trials much more efficiently."
