A senior staff nurse at Guernsey's Princess Elizabeth Hospital (search) is urging health authorities to make medicine safety training mandatory, warning that gaps in knowledge about adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are contributing to preventable hospital admissions and deaths.
Sophie Robert, who has witnessed firsthand the consequences of harmful responses to medications, said a better understanding of how to prevent adverse effects could help reduce mounting pressure on the hospital system. "I've seen the real good side of medicine, but I've also seen when medicine can harm. I think it's urgent, I think it should be a real top priority," Robert said.
The Scale of the Problem
Adverse drug reactions represent a significant but often under-recognized burden on healthcare systems. In the UK, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) received a total of 40,935 spontaneous suspected ADR reports in 2020 through the Yellow Card scheme. However, there are no reliable figures for the number of incidents occurring specifically in Guernsey, making it difficult to assess the full scope of the problem locally.
The Yellow Card system allows anyone — including healthcare professionals and members of the public — to report suspected side effects or adverse reactions to any medicines or vaccines, as well as faulty or malfunctioning medical device incidents.
A Personal Experience That Sparked Action
Robert's campaign was galvanized by a tragic clinical experience. She witnessed the death of a woman from a stroke shortly after the patient had been given medication, prompting her to submit a Yellow Card report. While it was not ultimately concluded that the death was linked to the medication, the incident exposed what Robert described as significant gaps in services.
"It made me realise the gaps in our services in terms of medicine safety. That's not just related to yellow card reports but side effects and adverse effects," she explained, noting the inherent difficulty in identifying the exact cause of adverse reactions.
Building Public Confidence in Reporting
Beyond training for healthcare workers, Robert emphasized the need to build public trust in the reporting system. She hopes to encourage patients and the public to come forward "so people feel safe to be able to report these things and not get shut down."
This view is echoed by Dr Linda Härmark, Director of the Drug Safety Research Unit (search) in the UK, who underscored the importance of pharmacovigilance. "It is very important to know more about adverse drug reactions," Dr Härmark said, adding that "in general the awareness about the yellow card system and who could report and why you should report, is generally quite low among the general public."
She reinforced the collective benefit of reporting: "By reporting something that you have experienced, you can help prevent that happening to someone else."
Engagement with Health Authorities
Robert has taken her concerns directly to Guernsey's Committee for Health and Social Care (HSC), which she described as having been "open and positive" in discussions about providing additional training. The HSC has declined to comment publicly on the matter.
Robert's advocacy highlights a broader challenge facing smaller jurisdictions: ensuring that pharmacovigilance infrastructure and training keep pace with the complexity of modern therapeutics, even in settings where local data may be limited.
