Omani Researcher's Novel Triazoline Compounds Show Broad Anticancer and Antimicrobial Activity

A research team led by Dr. Anwaar Said Al Maqbali, Assistant Professor at Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, has successfully synthesized a novel series of chiral triazoline compounds (search) that demonstrate significant anticancer and antimicrobial activity, opening new avenues for drug discovery.
The study, published in the journal Molecules, was among the winning research papers at the 12th National Research Award organized by Oman's Research and Innovation Authority, recognized in the Culture, Social and Basic Sciences field under the Young Researcher category.
A Precise Synthetic Approach
The research employed 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition, a precise chemical process, to construct molecules featuring a 4,5-dihydro-1H-[1,2,4]-triazoline core with an acetylated carbohydrate appendage. By incorporating carbohydrate-based components, the team enhanced the biological relevance of the resulting compounds.
Advanced analytical techniques were deployed to confirm molecular structure and properties. High-resolution mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray analysis provided detailed insights into the three-dimensional configurations and intermolecular interactions of the synthesized molecules.
Broad Pharmacological Activity
The pharmacological evaluation revealed substantial therapeutic potential. Selected compounds were screened across a panel of 60 cancer cell lines, with certain derivatives exhibiting high effectiveness against leukemia (search) cells specifically. Beyond anticancer activity, the molecules also demonstrated promising anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, underscoring their potential as versatile therapeutic agents.
Dr. Al Maqbali noted that the findings establish a reliable method for producing triazoline-based compounds with potential applications in drug development. "These molecules show promise as candidates for future therapeutic use," she stated.
Future Directions
Dr. Al Maqbali recommended several avenues for continued investigation: expanding biological evaluation across a wider range of targets, conducting detailed structure–activity relationship studies to understand how molecular variations influence biological performance, and examining the role of stereochemistry in enhancing drug effectiveness. She also emphasized the importance of optimizing and diversifying the synthesis approach to generate a broader library of compounds.
