The startup's AI-powered approach promises to compress synthesis timelines from months to days, potentially transforming how the industry approaches drug development.
The funding round was led by Fifty Years (搜索), with participation from Khosla Ventures (搜索), Speedinvest (搜索), OpenAI (搜索) co-founder Wojciech Zaremba, and Google (搜索)'s Chief Scientist Jeff Dean.
Addressing the Synthesis Bottleneck
The inspiration for Onepot AI (搜索) stemmed from a shared frustration experienced by both founders. "The best ideas in drug discovery were often blocked not by biology, but by synthesis," Boiko told TechCrunch. As a Ph.D. candidate studying machine learning in chemistry at Carnegie Mellon (搜索), Boiko observed that drug hunters were skipping promising compounds simply because the molecules seemed too difficult to manufacture. "The compounds never even got a chance to be tested," he explained.
Co-founder Andrei Tyrin, who studied computer science at MIT, witnessed the same problem from the computational perspective. "The models could generate ideas in hours, but it could take months for the lab to catch up," he said. This disconnect between AI-generated drug ideas and the physical synthesis capabilities created a significant bottleneck in the drug discovery pipeline.
AI-Powered Synthesis Platform
Onepot's solution centers around their small-molecule synthesis lab POT-1, which houses "Phil," an AI organic chemist designed to analyze experimental data and accelerate compound synthesis for biotech and pharmaceutical partners. The process operates through a straightforward model: clients browse Onepot's molecule catalog, place orders, and receive physical compounds shipped as dry powders or solutions within days.
"Currently, pharma and biotech companies either build entire teams of chemists in-house or work with contract research organizations overseas," Tyrin explained. Traditional human chemists can spend months researching to create even a single compound, at costs reaching thousands of dollars. "The main limiting factor here is not testing these compounds, but making them in the first place," Tyrin continued. "We aim to compress this down to days."
Advanced Data Capture and Training
The backend technology represents where Boiko and Tyrin are "rebuilding chemistry from scratch." They've constructed a lab environment where large language model agents access "molecule recipes" for training purposes. "When executing experiments in the lab, we capture every single detail that goes into the process," Tyrin said, including temperature controls and all ingredients added to mixtures.
"No information is lost, which makes experiences reproducible even if someone decides to run them in ten years from now," Tyrin explained. This comprehensive data capture allows their AI agents to generate hypotheses from real-world experiments rather than relying solely on literature data mined from the internet.
Strategic Timing and Market Position
The company's emergence comes at a strategically advantageous time. With global supply chains becoming increasingly vulnerable and escalating U.S.-China trade tensions, Boiko identified a critical opportunity: "Small molecule synthesis needed to be rebuilt from the ground up in the United States."
The startup positions itself against established competitors including WuXi AppTec and Enamine (搜索) in the service sector. Boiko described the fundraising process as "hectic," noting that what was supposed to be a short meeting with their lead investor "turned into a multi-hour whiteboard session about industrializing synthesis."
Expansion Plans and Vision
The fresh capital will fund construction of a second lab in San Francisco to accommodate more customers, team expansion, and enhancement of their compound discovery engine. Beyond immediate operational goals, the founders envision broader implications for drug discovery.
"You're not just speeding up drug discovery, you're expanding the design space for what drugs and materials can be," Boiko said. The company aims to make drug discovery at least two times faster while changing perceptions about previously challenging chemistry. "That drug that we haven't discovered yet, might be out there, waiting for us to find it," he concluded.
