Orchid Pharma Enters Russia Licensing Pact for Novel Antibiotic Exblifep, US Deal in Advanced Talks

The announcement, which sent Orchid Pharma shares up more than 11 percent in opening trade on July 8, comes as the company also advances toward a separate US licensing deal.
Under the terms of the Russian agreement, Pharmasyntez will hold exclusive rights to register and market Exblifep in Russia, subject to regulatory approval from the country's Ministry of Health. Orchid Pharma (search) will manufacture and supply the finished dosage form. The company estimates the partnership offers a potential revenue opportunity of approximately $178 million over the first 10 years, driven by significant unmet clinical demand and large-scale hospital procurement in the Russian market.
"Lots of them are in advanced discussion, and we hope to sign a lot of deals this year," said Mridul Dhanuka, whole-time director of Orchid Pharma (search), during a recent earnings call, referring to the company's broader multi-region licensing push.
US Licensing Deal Nears Finalization
Parallel to the Russia agreement, Orchid Pharma (search) is in advanced discussions to out-license enmetazobactam in the United States. The company indicated that a deal is likely to be finalized in the near term. "We hope the discussions will be closed in this quarter, coming quarter," Dhanuka said. Once an agreement is signed, the product would see a quick launch, as regulatory approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is already in place.
The therapy secured US regulatory approval in February 2024, representing a rare instance of an India-origin novel drug clearing a stringent Western regulator. Orchid is pursuing a partner-led strategy for commercialization rather than going solo in the US, mirroring its approach in Europe, where it has already licensed the drug to London-headquartered Advanz Pharma.
Clinical Profile and Market Potential
Exblifep combines cefepime with enmetazobactam and is designed as a carbapenem-sparing antibiotic to treat complicated urinary tract infections (search) (cUTI) and hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (search) (HAP/VAP) caused by Gram-negative bacterial pathogens. The drug targets resistant bacterial infections, including carbapenem-resistant strains, positioning it as a critical addition to the limited arsenal of next-generation antibiotics.
The drug has received approvals from both the FDA and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and is included in treatment guidelines issued by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST).
Orchid Pharma (search) continues to peg enmetazobactam-cefepime's lifetime global sales potential at $1 billion to $2 billion, depending on adoption rates across hospital systems and insurance coverage. Management noted that feedback from global opinion leaders has been consistently positive, with pricing and reimbursement emerging as the key determinants of uptake.
Multi-Region Expansion Strategy
Beyond the US and Russia, Orchid is negotiating licensing agreements across Japan, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, with discussions at different stages ranging from term sheets to definitive agreements. Complex negotiations, due diligence, and patent-related processes are extending timelines, according to the company. Orchid expects at least half of these partnerships to be signed over the next few quarters.
In India, Orchid has partnered with Cipla to distribute the drug.
Asset History
Originally developed by Orchid scientists, enmetazobactam was later out-licensed to Germany-based Allecra Therapeutics due to financial constraints. The asset returned to Orchid after Allecra ran into insolvency, with the company reacquiring the rights in 2025 and regaining control over its most valuable innovation.
Commenting on the Russia partnership, Manish Dhanuka, Managing Director of Orchid Pharma (search), said the collaboration with Pharmasyntez would help expand access to Exblifep in Russia by leveraging the latter's strong presence in the country's hospital procurement network.
