"They had to cut the nerves in my face," Ella stated, describing the profound impact of the procedure. The nerve resection resulted in significant facial paralysis and bruising, complications that would require extensive ongoing management.
Postoperative Treatment and Recovery
Following surgery, Ella underwent proton therapy at The Christie (search) in Manchester, a specialized cancer center known for its advanced radiotherapy capabilities. Despite the physical and psychological challenges — including facial paralysis that made her reluctant to leave her house — she returned to her university classes within approximately two weeks.

"When I started doing my first projects, I started thinking, 'this is what I want to do,'" Ella recalled. "I don't want to miss out just because of what cancer's done."
Long-Term Management and Outcomes
Ella was declared cancer-free the day before New Year's Eve in 2023, marking a significant milestone in her treatment journey. However, achieving cancer-free status did not mean the end of medical interventions. She continues to receive treatment for the lasting effects of the surgery, including regular Botox appointments and additional surgical procedures prior to her graduation.
During her recovery, Ella spent a year studying film and television at Columbia College Chicago, an experience she described as "the best thing I could have done," noting that she "found myself again there and started to become more confident."
Academic Achievement and Future Outlook
Despite the significant medical challenges, Ella graduated with a first-class honours degree in television and radio from the University of Salford. "I didn't think I'd be graduating now," she reflected, underscoring the uncertainty that accompanied her diagnosis and treatment. She now hopes to work behind the camera in television, having demonstrated remarkable perseverance through a complex cancer treatment journey that combined surgery, proton therapy, and ongoing rehabilitative care.
