Current Prevention Landscape

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends using registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone. For clothing and gear, products containing at least 0.5% permethrin are advised.
Additional prevention strategies include avoiding wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter, walking in the center of trails, and making outdoor spaces less hospitable to ticks through landscaping techniques such as removing leaf litter, clearing tall grasses, mowing frequently, and creating barriers of wood chips or gravel between lawns and wooded areas.

If a tick is found attached, health officials recommend using fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin's surface as possible and pulling upward with steady, even pressure. The bite area and hands should be thoroughly cleaned with soap and water, rubbing alcohol, or hand sanitizer afterward. Individuals who develop a rash or fever within several weeks of removing a tick should consult a healthcare provider and report the recent tick bite, when it occurred, and where the tick was likely acquired.
Common symptoms of tickborne diseases include fever, chills, body aches and pains, and the appearance of a rash. While most mild symptoms can be treated at home, medical attention is recommended if symptoms develop following a known tick bite.
