Philanthropic Surge Reshapes South Florida's Healthcare and Research Landscape

A historic wave of philanthropic investment is reshaping South Florida's healthcare infrastructure, promising to bring cutting-edge research, expanded clinical trials, and advanced medical care to a region experiencing rapid population growth. In recent weeks, Baptist Health South Florida (search)Search term announced the largest single philanthropic gift in its 66-year history: a $100 million donation from Dr. Herbert Wertheim to establish the Herbert Wertheim Cancer (search)Search disease Institute Transformational Impact Fund.

The fund is dedicated to advancing cancer (search)Search disease care, research, prevention, education, and innovation across Baptist Health medical facilities. The gift will also establish the Dr. Herbert Wertheim Center for Cancer Prevention, strengthening research infrastructure and expanding clinical trials. "It's a transformational gift for cancer care. Wertheim, founder of Miami-based optical products manufacturer Brain Power Incorporated, has focused his philanthropic giving on education and healthcare. His donation follows a $50 million gift from Citadel (search)Search term CEO Ken Griffin to Baptist Health in 2024, designated for research and patient care for Alzheimer's disease (search)Search disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Ken Griffin's Expanding Healthcare Footprint

Since relocating Citadel (search)Search term's global headquarters from Chicago to Miami in 2022, Griffin has systematically reshaped the South Florida healthcare landscape through a series of major donations. His contributions include $25 million to Nicklaus Children's Hospital in 2023 for a pediatric surgical tower; $50 million to the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer (search)Search disease Center in 2024 for a 12-story research facility that will double the center's research footprint; $15 million to Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2025 to support the Braman Comprehensive Cancer Center; $3 million to Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida in 2026 to nearly double lodging capacity for families; and $10 million to the University of Miami Health System in 2026 for the Division of Digestive Health and Liver Diseases, including recruitment of physician-scientist Dr. Field Willingham.

The Post-Pandemic Philanthropic Shift

Alexandra Villoch, chief executive officer of Baptist Health Foundation, observed a marked increase in large philanthropic donations earmarked for healthcare immediately following the COVID-19 pandemic. "I think COVID brought home the fact that you need extraordinary good healthcare where you live," Villoch said. "Because you could be the wealthiest person in the middle of COVID, but you couldn't get on an airplane to go to New York."

Nationally, health philanthropy now represents 10% of total giving in the United States, according to Giving USA. The trend reflects a post-pandemic push toward community giving, with donors increasingly focused on seeing their capital address localized health needs. "Philanthropy is not the same thing as charity," Villoch noted. "It's more about investing in the future. I think 99% of the philanthropy that we receive here in South Florida is coming from somebody who has either personally been touched by a disease or they have had a family member touched by a disease."

Pediatric and Specialty Care Investments

Helen and Jacob Shaham, founders of The Palace Group of Senior Living Communities, donated $15 million to Nicklaus Children's Health System, where the Cancer (search)Search disease & Blood Disorders Institute now bears their name. "My father-in-law died from cancer. My identical twin brother died from cancer two years ago. It's close to us," Jacob Shaham said. "For the last 45 years, we did everything for our elderly residents; now, it's time to do something for our youngest residents."

In Broward County, Broward Health received a $5.2 million gift in May 2025 from the Henry E. Haller Jr. Foundation to support two new labs at Broward Health Medical Center focused on heart health, equipped with Siemens Artis Icono systems for cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology.

Palm Beach County saw the opening of a $430 million hospital on May 22 — the first new north county hospital since 1979 — financed and operated by Universal Health ServicesView company profile, founded by billionaire Alan B. Miller. "This hospital is a blessing for this community," said Miller, 88. "In the future, you will see that it is so essential to keeping people well and saving lives."

Medical Schools as Venture Capital Targets

South Florida's medical schools are also attracting large donations, with donors increasingly treating contributions like venture capital — funding scholarship programs and expecting regional public health upgrades or clinical research breakthroughs. Dr. Chad Perlyn, executive vice president and chief medical officer at Nova Southeastern University and dean of NSU's Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine, said: "We're seeing philanthropy support both major infrastructure projects and groundbreaking scientific initiatives that have the potential to improve lives far beyond our region."

Philanthropist David Husman, who lost his wife Cathy to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (search)Search disease in 2023, gave Nova Southeastern University a $20 million gift for ALS research, establishing the David and Cathy Husman Neuroscience Institute and bringing his total support for the university's neuroscience efforts to $41 million.

In April, the Shahams donated $30 million to FIU's College of Medicine — the largest in the medical school's history — to fund construction of a seven-story, 94,000-square-foot Shaham Academic Medical Center. Loreen Chant, president and CEO of the Health Foundation of South Florida, emphasized that continued population growth will make health philanthropy increasingly vital. "Philanthropic leaders are recognizing that investments in hospitals, medical education, research, and community health initiatives can create lasting benefits that extend well beyond individual patients and strengthen the future of the entire region," Chant said.

As South Florida's community of billionaire philanthropists continues to grow, those suffering from diseases like Parkinson's or seeking experimental therapies for Alzheimer's will increasingly find medical innovation in their backyard rather than having to travel outside the state.
