Precision Neuroscience Raises $250M Series D to Push Its Brain-Surface Interface Toward Permanent Implants

Precision Neuroscience (搜索) closed a $250 million Series D round led by Bill Ackman's Pershing Square, the Ackman Oxman Institute and an unnamed life sciences fund.
The New York company's Layer 7 Cortical Interface (搜索) holds FDA 510(k) clearance for temporary use of up to 30 days, granted in April 2025.
Precision says it has performed more than 100 procedures at 18 medical centres and is preparing an early feasibility study of a fully implantable system for severe paralysis (搜索).
Precision Neuroscience (搜索) has raised $250 million in a Series D round to advance its minimally invasive brain-computer interface, the New York company announced on Thursday. Bill Ackman's Pershing Square, the Ackman Oxman Institute and an unnamed life sciences fund led the round, which values Precision at just over $1 billion, according to The New York Times. Pershing Square and the institute contributed $42.5 million of the total.
The company, founded in 2021, has now raised $430 million in total. The new round also drew the Duquesne Family Office, B Capital, ARK Invest and Invus, with Mubadala Capital, Mirae Asset Capital, Korea Investment Partners, Hitachi Ventures and JSL Health Capital participating. ARK Invest is also an investor in Neuralink (搜索).
A thin film on the cortical surface
Precision's flagship product, the Layer 7 Cortical Interface (搜索), is a thin-film electrode array with 1,024 electrodes designed to rest on the brain's surface rather than being implanted inside it. The device received FDA 510(k) clearance in April 2025 for temporary use of up to 30 days. At the time, Precision said the device is one part of a wireless implant that remains in development.
The design contrasts with Neuralink (搜索), Elon Musk's implantable BCI venture, which threads thin electrodes directly into brain tissue using a proprietary surgical robot. Experts told the Times that surface devices carry less risk of infection or scarring, while electrodes placed inside the brain can read single neurons, which some experts think could make them more accurate. Synchron (搜索), backed by Jeff Bezos among others, delivers its Stentrode device through blood vessels, avoiding open brain surgery entirely.
One of Precision's founders, Benjamin Rapoport, was also a co-founder of Neuralink (搜索), according to the Times. Precision was founded by Rapoport and Michael Mager.
Clinical dataset and Medtronic partnership
Precision says it has carried out more than 100 procedures on patients at 18 medical centres, building a dataset that few competitors outside Neuralink (搜索) can match in scale. In January 2026, the company partnered with Medtronic to integrate its electrode array with surgical navigation systems. Precision manufactures its own electrode arrays in Texas.
The company is preparing an early feasibility study of its fully implantable system for people with severe paralysis (搜索), according to Neurofounders. Chief executive Michael Mager told the Times that the new funding will help Precision seek approval for permanent implants, a process he said is likely to take years.
"The next phase of BCI will be defined by more than technology alone," Mager said in the company's statement.
Ackman's first institute investment
Ackman founded the Ackman Oxman Institute, a brain research centre in Manhattan, with his wife, Neri Oxman. Precision is the institute's first investment, the Times reported. Ackman told the paper that Precision's less invasive approach was part of what drew him in.
"We have learned that the brain can recover from even catastrophic injury, and that there is far more that can be done for people living with neurological injuries," Ackman said in the company's statement.
Ackman's involvement has a personal backstory: his daughter suffered a brain hemorrhage (搜索), an experience that pushed the Pershing Square founder toward neuroscience funding. He and his wife subsequently established the institute as a nonprofit focused on advancing brain research, with an initial commitment of roughly $400 million.
The Series D builds on a Series C round in December 2024 that brought in $102 million at a post-money valuation of approximately $500 million.
