The PRImus-AD study enrolled 304 patients with early-stage Alzheimer's disease across 40 test centers in six European countries, with 540 patients screened during the recruitment phase.
Novel Mechanism of Action
PRI-002 represents a first-in-class therapeutic approach that targets the causes of neuronal destruction (search) in Alzheimer's disease (search) through a purely physical mechanism of action. This innovative strategy differs fundamentally from antibody-based therapies currently available for Alzheimer's treatment. The drug candidate is designed with an anti-prionic mechanism of action specifically to dissolve neurotoxic protein aggregates (search).
Clinical Advantages Over Current Therapies
The drug candidate offers several significant advantages over existing treatments, particularly antibody therapies directed against protein deposits. "PRI-002 has considerable advantages over previous therapies, especially antibody therapies directed against protein deposits. With PRI-002, there is no risk of brain swelling during therapy, which means that regular MRI examinations are no longer necessary," explains Prof. Oliver Peters, MD, Medical Director of the study.
Additionally, PRI-002 can be administered orally as a capsule, eliminating the need for intravenous infusions typically required with current antibody-based treatments. "In addition, PRI-002 can be easily taken orally as a capsule and does not have to be administered as an infusion by a doctor," Peters noted.
Study Design and Timeline
The PRImus-AD study is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase II clinical trial designed to evaluate both the safety and efficacy of PRI-002 in patients with early-stage Alzheimer's disease (search). The study is being conducted by PRInnovation GmbH as the sponsor and is funded by the Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation SPRIND (search).
Results from the Phase II trial are expected in the second half of 2026. If the results prove positive, the companies plan to launch a Phase III approval study in partnership with a pharmaceutical company.
