Qnovia's RespiRx Inhaled Nicotine Therapy Shows Promise in Phase 1 Trial with Cigarette-Like Delivery Speed
核心洞察
Qnovia (搜索)'s RespiRx (搜索) achieved cigarette-comparable nicotine delivery in a Phase 1 trial of 25 healthy adults, reaching peak blood levels in 7 minutes with a Cmax of 8.7 ng/mL.
The inhaled nicotine replacement therapy demonstrated meaningful reduction in urge-to-smoke scores while maintaining a favorable safety profile with only moderate cough reported.
RespiRx (搜索) represents the first major nicotine replacement therapy innovation in over 20 years, using vibrating mesh nebulizer technology to deliver pharmaceutical-grade nicotine without combustion or carcinogens.
Qnovia (搜索) announced positive results from its Phase 1 clinical trial evaluating RespiRx (搜索), a handheld inhalable nicotine replacement therapy that achieved cigarette-comparable nicotine delivery with a favorable safety profile. The study, conducted in 2025 on 25 healthy adults, represents the first major advancement in smoking cessation (搜索) technology in over two decades.
Clinical Trial Results Demonstrate Rapid Nicotine Delivery
The randomized, open-label, three-way crossover study compared RespiRx (搜索) to traditional cigarettes and the discontinued Nicotrol Inhaler. Key findings showed RespiRx reached peak blood levels in 7 minutes with just 10 puffs, achieving a Cmax of 8.7 ng/mL and demonstrating a Tmax comparable to combustible cigarettes of approximately 6 minutes.
"The findings show that our novel nicotine delivery method — via a cool mist, without any heating or combustion — matches the speed and habit-loop of smoking and vaping without the carcinogens," said Mario Danek, founder and CEO of Qnovia (搜索).
The study revealed RespiRx (搜索) delivered lower plasma nicotine exposure than cigarettes while maintaining effective craving relief without excessive dosing. Participants experienced meaningful reduction in urge-to-smoke scores, suggesting effective satiation. The therapy demonstrated a favorable safety profile with no serious side effects or adverse events, with only moderate cough reported.
Addressing Critical Gaps in Smoking Cessation
Current smoking cessation (搜索) challenges remain substantial, with the World Health Organization estimating about 8 million deaths annually among roughly 1.2 billion smokers globally. Despite 70% of worldwide smokers wanting to quit, relapse rates sit between 60% to 90% within the year, and quit rates remain in the single digits.
"Most current FDA-approved therapies were designed decades ago and fail to reflect the neurobiology, pharmacokinetics, and behavioral drivers of addiction," Danek explained. "The consequence is staggering: smoking-related disease is projected to generate trillions of dollars in direct and indirect healthcare burden over the coming decade, spanning respiratory disease (搜索), cardiovascular morbidity (搜索), cancer (搜索), and premature mortality."
Existing nicotine replacement therapies including patches, gums, lozenges, and legacy devices typically have low success rates due to slow onset, sensory mismatch and poor adherence.
Expert Commentary on Innovation Potential
Robert West, Chairman of Qnovia (搜索)'s Scientific Advisory Board and Professor Emeritus of Health Psychology at University College London, highlighted the significance of the development: "Medicinal nicotine products, such as skin patches and gum, have lacked the speed of nicotine delivery needed for many smokers, while, more recently, e-cigarettes, as mass-market products, have raised concerns about creating or sustaining nicotine addiction (搜索) in people who would otherwise not have smoked. Qnovia's nicotine device offers the prospect of a medicinal nicotine product that is effective at controlling cigarette cravings and easing the transition to smoking cessation (搜索) for millions of smokers."
Technology Platform and Market Position
RespiRx (搜索) represents a category-defining shift, engineered to deliver controlled, pharmaceutical-grade nicotine directly to the lung without combustion, smoke, or carcinogens, while preserving the rapid onset and sensory cues that reinforce smoking behavior. The platform utilizes Qnovia (搜索)'s ultraportable vibrating mesh nebulizer technology, marking it as the first cartridge-based, ultra-portable vibrating mesh nebulizer and the first-ever truly inhaled Investigational New Drug-cleared NRT.
By restoring pulmonary delivery and clinically relevant pharmacokinetics, RespiRx (搜索) addresses the primary reasons conventional NRTs underperform in real-world settings. The therapy is positioned as the first safe and effective NRT innovation introduced to the market in over 20 years, following the discontinuation of Nicotrol Inhaler production in 2023.
